CHAPTER 8: THE WOMAN WHO CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD

CHAPTER 8: THE WOMAN WHO CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD

I stared at the message for almost ten minutes.

No name.

No phone number.

No explanation.

Just one sentence:

"If you want the truth about Rachel Morgan, meet me alone."

My first instinct was not curiosity.

It was caution.

Because I had learned something important about Daniel Cross.

Nothing around him happened by accident.

Every conversation.

Every meeting.

Every person who entered his world.

Everything had a purpose.

So the question wasn't:

Who sent the message?

The question was:

Who wanted me to believe they sent it?

I showed Emily.

The moment she read it, the color disappeared from her face.

"No."

One word.

Immediate.

Certain.

"What?"

She looked at me.

"You can't go."

I expected fear.

But what I saw was something different.

Pain.

"Emily, if this is about Rachel—"

"That's exactly why you can't go."

She took the phone from my hand.

"Victoria, you don't understand."

"Then explain."

She looked at the message again.

Then she whispered:

"Rachel didn't just disappear."

I waited.

"She ran."

"From Daniel?"

Emily nodded.

"But she didn't run because she was scared."

She looked at me.

"She ran because she found something."

"What?"

Emily was silent.

Then she said:

"The reason Daniel married you."

The room became quiet.

My stomach tightened.

I already knew Daniel had chosen me for a reason.

The marriage strategy document proved that.

But hearing it from Emily made it feel different.

"What does Rachel know?"

Emily walked toward the window.

"Something Daniel has spent years hiding."

"Tell me."

She turned around.

"Rachel discovered that Daniel's marriage wasn't just about controlling women."

"Then what was it about?"

Emily looked directly at me.

"Legacy."

That night, I went to the meeting.

Alone.

At least that was what Daniel would think.

Emily followed me from a distance.

Not close enough to be seen.

Close enough to help if something went wrong.

The location was an old bookstore on the edge of downtown.

Quiet.

Almost empty.

I walked inside.

The smell of old paper filled the air.

A woman sat in the back corner.

Her hair was darker than in the photographs.

Older.

More tired.

But I knew her immediately.

Rachel Morgan.

The first wife of Daniel Cross.

The woman everyone believed had disappeared.

She looked up at me.

And for a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she said:

"You look exactly like I imagined."

My heart stopped.

"What?"

She gave a sad smile.

"Daniel always had a type."

I sat across from her.

"You know who I am."

"Of course."

"How?"

Rachel looked away.

"Because I know Daniel."

The way she said his name told me everything.

Not love.

Not anger.

Something deeper.

A scar.

"You sent the message?"

She nodded.

"Yes."

"Why now?"

Rachel studied me.

"Because I saw the news."

I frowned.

"What news?"

"Your wedding."

I didn't understand.

"Rachel..."

She interrupted.

"Victoria, Daniel didn't choose you because you were useful."

I waited.

"He chose you because you were dangerous."

The words confused me.

"Dangerous?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

She leaned closer.

"Because you are the first woman he couldn't completely control."

I thought about that.

The way I questioned him.

The way I refused to apologize.

The way I walked away.

"He didn't know."

"No."

Rachel smiled slightly.

"That was his mistake."

"Tell me everything."

Rachel looked down.

"I married Daniel when I was twenty-eight."

Her voice became distant.

"He was charming."

I almost smiled.

"Everyone says that."

"That's because it's true."

She looked at me.

"Daniel wasn't always cruel."

That surprised me.

"He wasn't?"

"No."

She looked at her hands.

"That's what makes people like him dangerous."

"What happened?"

"He changed."

"When?"

"When he realized power mattered more than people."

Rachel explained how Daniel slowly transformed.

At first, small things.

Making decisions without asking.

Controlling social situations.

Choosing who she could spend time with.

Then bigger things.

Financial control.

Isolation.

Manipulation.

The same pattern Emily described.

"But why didn't you leave?"

Rachel smiled sadly.

"Because I thought I could fix him."

The sentence hurt because I understood it.

Many women stayed because they believed love could repair someone.

"What made you finally leave?"

Rachel's expression changed.

"His father."

I froze.

"Daniel's father?"

She nodded.

"Richard Cross."

The name sounded familiar.

The founder of Cross Industries.

"What did he do?"

"He showed me something."

"What?"

Rachel opened her bag.

She pulled out a small envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

A young Daniel.

Standing beside his father.

And another person.

A woman.

I looked closer.

"Who is she?"

Rachel answered:

"Daniel's mother."

I frowned.

"I don't understand."

"Look at the date."

I checked.

Twenty-five years earlier.

Then I saw something written on the back.

A name.

Eleanor Vale.

"Who is Eleanor Vale?"

Rachel looked at me.

"The woman Richard Cross destroyed."

My eyes narrowed.

"What does this have to do with me?"

Rachel took a deep breath.

"Everything."

She placed another document on the table.

My name was written on it.

Again.

But this time...

It wasn't from Daniel.

It was from years ago.

I picked it up.

And my hands went cold.

Because at the bottom of the page was a signature.

My father's signature.

I looked at Rachel.

"What is this?"

She whispered:

"Your family and the Cross family have been connected for decades."

I couldn't speak.

"My father never mentioned the Cross family."

"Of course he didn't."

"Why?"

"Because your father knew the truth."

"What truth?"

Rachel leaned forward.

"The Cross empire was built on a betrayal."

I stared at the document.

"And my family?"

She answered quietly:

"Your family was the reason Daniel's father almost lost everything."

A thousand questions rushed through my mind.

Why did Daniel choose me?

Why did he know so much about me?

Why did he create a marriage plan?

Why did Rachel disappear?

And why was my family connected to his?

Then Rachel said the words that changed everything.

"Daniel didn't marry you to gain your family's reputation."

I looked up.

"Then why?"

Her eyes filled with sadness.

"He married you because he believes you are the key to destroying your own family."

The room went silent.

I felt like the ground disappeared beneath me.

"What?"

Rachel looked at me.

"Daniel has been planning this for years."

"Planning what?"

"Revenge."

Against my family.

Against my name.

Against everything I thought I knew.

I stood up slowly.

"I need answers."

Rachel nodded.

"And you will get them."

She reached into her bag one more time.

She placed a small flash drive on the table.

"What is this?"

"The reason I survived."

I picked it up.

"What's inside?"

Rachel looked toward the door.

Then back at me.

"Everything Daniel never wanted anyone to see."

When I returned to Emily's apartment, she immediately knew something had changed.

"What happened?"

I placed the flash drive on the table.

"Rachel is alive."

Emily covered her mouth.

For several seconds, she couldn't speak.

Then she whispered:

"How?"

"I don't know."

I looked at the drive.

"But I know something else."

"What?"

I stared at the small piece of technology holding years of secrets.

"My marriage wasn't the beginning of this."

I looked at Emily.

"It was the final move in a game Daniel started decades ago."

Across the city, Daniel Cross stood inside his office.

He looked at a photograph on his desk.

My wedding picture.

The same one newspapers had printed everywhere.

His phone rang.

He answered.

"Is she with Rachel?"

A voice responded.

Daniel's expression changed.

"Are you sure?"

Silence.

Then Daniel looked out over the city.

For the first time in years...

He looked worried.

Because Rachel Morgan was alive.

May you like

And she had found the one person who could destroy him.

His new wife.
