CHAPTER 5: THE MAN AT THE DOOR

CHAPTER 5: THE MAN AT THE DOOR
The knocking stopped.
That was somehow worse.
Because Daniel Cross was not a man who needed to force his way into a room.
He didn't have to.
People opened doors for him.
They trusted him.
They admired him.
They believed the carefully created version of him.
But Emily knew the truth.
And I was starting to.
She grabbed my hand and pulled me toward the back hallway.
"Stay quiet."
Her voice was barely a whisper.
"What are we doing?"
"Leaving."
"Through where?"
She pointed toward a small window at the end of the hallway.
My eyes widened.
"You want us to climb out that?"
"It's better than opening that door."
I looked back toward the entrance.
Daniel's voice came again.
Calm.
Almost polite.
"Emily, I don't want to make this difficult."
I felt a chill.
Because people like Daniel never said things like that unless they meant the opposite.
Emily moved faster.
She pushed open the window.
Cold air rushed inside.
"I can't believe this is happening."
She looked at me.
"I can."
There was pain in her voice.
"I knew this day would come."
I stared at her.
"Why?"
"Because you found me."
Before I could answer, a loud knock shook the apartment.
"Emily."
Daniel's voice became sharper.
"You know how this ends."
Emily froze.
I noticed.
A small movement.
A flash of old memories.
She wasn't just afraid of him.
She remembered him.
And whatever happened between them was something she had spent years trying to escape.
I climbed through the window first.
The fire escape was narrow and rusty.
Emily followed.
We moved down quietly.
Almost halfway down, the apartment door opened.
My body went completely still.
Daniel had entered.
I could hear his footsteps.
Slow.
Confident.
Like he owned the place.
Because in his mind, he owned everything.
"Emily?"
No answer.
"You're making a mistake."
I looked up.
Through the window, I saw his shadow move across the room.
Then his voice changed.
Softer.
More personal.
"You always did this."
Emily stopped moving.
I looked at her.
"What?"
She shook her head.
"Don't listen."
But Daniel continued.
"You panic. You run. You convince yourself you're protecting people."
A pause.
"Just like Rachel."
Emily's face went pale.
I grabbed the railing.
Rachel.
Even now, he was using her name.
"You don't get to say her name."
Emily's voice was louder than before.
For the first time, I heard something different.
Not fear.
Anger.
Daniel laughed.
"You still think you're the hero."
The window opened.
We froze.
Daniel appeared.
Looking down.
And when his eyes met mine...
He smiled.
Not surprised.
Not angry.
Almost amused.
"There you are."
My heart dropped.
Emily stepped in front of me.
"Leave her alone."
Daniel looked at Emily.
"You're protecting her?"
His eyes moved back to me.
"Interesting."
I hated how calm he was.
A normal person would be angry.
A normal person would yell.
Daniel didn't.
He calculated.
Every word.
Every reaction.
"You really told her everything?"
Emily said nothing.
Daniel sighed.
"You always were emotional."
That sentence hit me.
Because it was exactly what Emily had warned me about.
Making people doubt themselves.
Making victims look unstable.
I climbed down another step.
"Stop."
Daniel looked at me.
My voice surprised him.
"What did you say?"
"I said stop."
A small smile appeared on his face.
"You think you understand what's happening?"
"No."
I looked directly at him.
"But I understand enough."
His smile disappeared slightly.
"You married me because you needed something from me."
Silence.
Emily looked at me.
Daniel didn't deny it.
That told me everything.
"See?" he said quietly.
"Already listening to people who want to destroy us."
I almost laughed.
"Us?"
He tilted his head.
"Yes. Us."
I looked at the man who destroyed a dinner table three nights after our wedding.
The man who threatened me.
The man who secretly collected information about me.
"Daniel, you don't know what love is."
His expression changed.
Just slightly.
But I saw it.
A crack.
"You should be careful."
"Why?"
"Because you don't know what you're fighting."
I smiled.
"No."
I stepped down.
"You don't know what you're fighting."
For the first time...
Daniel looked uncertain.
Only for a second.
But it was there.
Then he reached into his coat pocket.
My body tensed.
But he didn't pull out a weapon.
He pulled out a phone.
He held it up.
A photo appeared on the screen.
My sister.
My heart stopped.
"What did you do?"
Daniel watched my reaction carefully.
"I didn't do anything."
"Then why are you showing me that?"
"Because I want you to understand something."
He lowered the phone.
"You have people you love."
A threat.
Not directly spoken.
But clear.
Emily whispered:
"He's warning you."
Daniel looked at her.
"No, Emily."
Then he looked back at me.
"I'm reminding her."
I felt something inside me become cold.
The fear disappeared.
Completely.
Because there was something Daniel didn't understand.
He thought threatening my family would make me surrender.
But he had just made his biggest mistake.
He showed me exactly what kind of battle this was.
And I knew how to fight battles.
I climbed down the final steps.
My feet touched the ground.
Daniel watched me from above.
"You are making this harder than it needs to be."
I looked up.
"No."
I held his gaze.
"You made it harder the moment you thought hurting me was acceptable."
He smiled.
"You still think you're the victim."
I shook my head.
"Actually..."
I took out my phone.
The new phone.
The one Daniel didn't know about.
"I think you're the victim."
His expression changed.
"What?"
I pressed a button.
A recording played.
His own voice.
The night he flipped the table.
"You need a beating to understand your place."
Daniel's face changed instantly.
For the first time...
I saw real fear.
Not anger.
Not confidence.
Fear.
Because he understood.
The one thing powerful men feared most.
Evidence.
"You recorded me."
"Yes."
Emily looked at me.
A small smile appeared.
"You learned quickly."
Daniel stared at me.
"You have no idea what you've started."
I looked at him.
"Actually, I do."
I stepped away.
"And so do you."
Then I walked into the darkness with Emily beside me.
But I knew this wasn't over.
Not even close.
Because Daniel Cross had just discovered something important.
He couldn't control me.
So he would try something else.
He would attack my reputation.
My family.
My life.
He would use every weapon he had.
But he forgot one thing.
I had spent years learning how to survive.
And now...
I was learning how to win.
The next morning, every major news outlet reported the same story.
"Daniel Cross' New Wife Seen Leaving Home After Explosive Argument."
But there was one thing nobody knew.
The story wasn't about a marriage falling apart.
It was about an empire beginning to collapse.
May you like
And Daniel Cross had no idea...
I already had the first piece of evidence that could bring him down.
