Chapter 2: The Executive Floor

Beatrice had never been on the third floor of the Rossi estate. It was a fortress within a fortress, reserved only for Leo, Lily, and Mateo. The carpets were impossibly plush, and the air smelled of cedar and expensive cologne.

A private doctor, whisked in through a side entrance, tended to Lily first. Once the little girl was breathing normally and tucked into a massive four-poster bed, the doctor turned his attention to Beatrice. He stitched the gash on her cheek in silence while Leo stood in the corner of the room, watching her intently.

"Why did she do it?" Leo finally asked, pouring a glass of amber liquid from a crystal decanter and handing it to Beatrice.

Beatrice took a sip, letting the bourbon burn down her throat. "Ms. Kensington wanted to send Lily to a boarding school in Switzerland. Lily overheard her on the phone. When Lily threw a fit and threatened to tell you, Ms. Kensington dragged her toward the cellar to 'teach her a lesson.' I tried to stop her."

Leo’s jaw clenched so tight Beatrice thought his teeth might shatter. "You put your life on the line for my daughter. Why?"

Beatrice looked down at her bruised hands. "Because Lily is the only person in this house who ever saw me as a human being."
