Chapter 5: The Retaliation

Peace in the Rossi world was always a fleeting illusion. Three days after Victoria’s exile, a delivery truck breached the outer gates of the estate. The explosion shattered the morning calm, blowing the massive iron gates off their hinges and sending shockwaves through the mansion.

Beatrice was in the library with Lily when the windows blew inward. Without a second thought, she threw her large body over the child, taking the brunt of the flying glass across her back.

Alarms blared. Gunfire erupted on the lawn. Leo burst into the library, an assault rifle in his hands, his eyes wild with panic until he saw Beatrice slowly sitting up, shielding Lily completely.

Beatrice didn't panic. She scooped Lily up, ignoring the sting of glass in her shoulders, and followed Leo into the hidden passageways behind the library bookshelves.
