Chapter 6: The Safehouse
They fled to a heavily fortified cabin deep in the snowy woods of northern Michigan. It was a stark contrast to the mansion—rustic, isolated, and cold. Only Leo, Mateo, Beatrice, and Lily made the trip.
That night, after Lily finally fell asleep in a small bedroom, Beatrice sat by the fireplace, trying to pick small shards of glass out of her own shoulder. She couldn't reach them all.
"Let me," a deep voice said.
Leo stepped into the firelight. He carried a first-aid kit and sat down on the edge of the hearth behind her. His gentle hands were a shocking contrast to the violence he orchestrated daily. As he used tweezers to remove the glass, he spoke quietly.
"My wife died in an explosion, just like that," Leo confessed, his voice thick with old grief. "I wasn't fast enough to save her. When I saw the windows blow in today, I thought I lost my daughter, too."
