Chapter 9: Blood and Snow
Above them, hell broke loose. The sounds of breaking furniture, shouting men, and deafening gunshots echoed through the floorboards. Beatrice held Lily tight against her chest, singing a soft lullaby to drown out the violence.
Suddenly, the cellar doors violently rattled. Heavy footsteps stomped above.
"Check the basement!" an unfamiliar voice yelled.
The wooden door above them splintered as a crowbar dug into the frame. Beatrice pushed Lily behind some wooden crates in the dark. She stood up, raising the heavy gun with both hands, aiming it squarely at the door.

The wood gave way. A man in a tactical vest dropped into the cellar, sweeping a flashlight across the room. The beam hit Beatrice.
She didn't hesitate. She squeezed the trigger. The recoil knocked her backward into the dirt, but the man crumpled to the floor. She had killed him. Beatrice dropped the gun, her hands shaking so violently she couldn't breathe.
