Chapter 11 - The Man Who Almost Confessed

Sabrina’s release had been temporary and closely supervised.

At least, that was what the court records showed.

The video proved she had removed her monitoring bracelet and entered the bank while officers believed she was undergoing prenatal testing.

Her medical transport company had been hired through the Vale Foundation.

Marcus controlled the drivers.

By the time police reached Sabrina’s residence, she had returned to custody and replaced the bracelet.

She claimed the video was fabricated.

The device data showed no interruption.

Someone had cloned the signal.

Claire Cross was arrested at a bus station before dawn.

She carried three passports and access codes to the cryptocurrency wallet holding Thomas’s stolen money.

Under questioning, she blamed Daniel.

Then Sabrina.

Then Helena.

Only after prosecutors threatened a conspiracy charge carrying decades in prison did Claire agree to cooperate.

She admitted impersonating Leah at the bank.

She admitted helping move Leah and Ellie from the hospital.

She also admitted Marcus had planned to kill Daniel.

“What does he plan for Evan?” Ruiz asked.

Claire looked toward the camera.

“I don’t know.”

“You were in the elevator when Sabrina discussed a second death.”

“She did not tell me how.”

“Where is Marcus?”

“He changes locations every night.”

“Who helps him?”

Claire hesitated.

“Someone at Mercer Global.”

“Name.”

“I only know the initials.”

She wrote two letters.

H.M.

Helena Mercer denied helping Marcus escape.

Her attorney argued the initials could refer to hundreds of people.

Evan remembered Helena’s warning that Daniel was not the only possible father connected to Sabrina’s plan.

He demanded she explain.

During a recorded jail visit, Helena finally did.

“Sabrina believed Thomas had changed more than the firstborn trust,” she said.

“What else?”

“He created a separate controlling trust tied to any descendant carrying a specific Mercer genetic marker.”

“The blood disorder?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Thomas worried someone would falsify paternity.”

Evan laughed bitterly.

“They did exactly that.”

“The marker would prove family ancestry even if the legal father was disputed.”

“Daniel carries it because he is your son.”

“Yes.”

“So his baby could qualify.”

“Possibly.”

“Who else knew?”

“Thomas.

Daniel.

Marcus.

And Howard Mercer.”

Evan stared at her.

“Uncle Howard?”

Thomas’s younger brother had disappeared from family life twelve years earlier after a financial dispute.

The family claimed he moved to Europe.

No one had heard from him since.

“Howard helped Thomas draft the original trust,” Helena explained.

“His initials are H.M.”

“Where is he?”

“I don’t know.”

“Is he alive?”

“I believed he was.”

“Believed?”

“Daniel told me Howard died overseas.”

“Did you see proof?”

“No.”

Helena’s expression changed.

“Thomas once suspected Daniel had falsified Howard’s death certificate.”

“Why?”

“Because Howard remained the alternate trustee if Thomas died.”

If Howard Mercer was alive, he could override Sabrina and Daniel’s control of Ellie’s shares.

He could also testify about the trust.

That made him another target.

Ruiz initiated an international search.

No death certificate existed under Howard’s legal identity.

A passport connected to an alias had entered the United States six weeks earlier.

The arrival date matched the week Sabrina scheduled the wedding.

Howard had returned because he knew the conspiracy was reaching its final stage.

Evan returned to the hospital to confront Daniel.

“What happened to Howard Mercer?”

Daniel looked genuinely afraid.

“I thought Marcus handled him.”

“Handled?”

“He was living in Montreal under another name.

Sabrina learned he intended to contact you.”

“Did she order Marcus to kill him?”

“I don’t know.”

“You know enough.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“There is a cabin in Vermont.

Howard used it before leaving the country.”

“Address.”

“I want a written agreement.”

“You are bargaining while your own child’s mother is trying to murder everyone who knows the truth.”

Daniel’s face twisted.

“She does not love me.”

“No.”

“She loved what you could give her.”

“She did not love me either.”

For the first time, the brothers looked at each other without the company between them.

Only damage remained.

Daniel gave the address.

Police found the Vermont cabin empty.

Inside were recent food supplies, medical equipment and copies of Thomas’s trust documents.

There was also a wall covered with photographs.

Evan.

Leah.

Ellie.

Sabrina.

Daniel.

Howard had been observing them.

On the desk lay a letter addressed to Evan.

I returned because Thomas asked me to protect the child if his plan failed.

Do not trust the trust documents in Box 317.

They are incomplete.

The true controlling provision is hidden where Thomas first recognized Ellie.

Evan knew the place.

The rose garden.

Thomas first saw Ellie there during a summer reception.

Police searched the estate garden.

Beneath a stone bench, they found a waterproof tube containing an original trust amendment.

It named Howard Mercer as permanent independent trustee.

It also contained a handwritten statement from Thomas accusing Sabrina and Daniel of fraud.

Before Ruiz could remove the documents, a gunshot struck the bench.

Officers pulled Evan to the ground.

A second shot shattered a garden light.

The shooter fired from the roof of Leah’s cottage.

Police surrounded the building.

They found no one inside.

A rope hung from the rear window.

On the roof lay a rifle, a spent cartridge and a bloodstained glove.

DNA testing produced an unexpected match.

The blood belonged to Howard Mercer.

A trail led into the woods.

At the edge of the estate, police found Howard unconscious beneath a tree.

He had been shot before being forced onto the cottage roof.

When he regained consciousness, he whispered one name.

“Marcus.”

Then he grabbed Ruiz’s sleeve.

“He is inside the house.”

Security alarms activated.

The main residence went dark.

Evan ran toward the east wing.

Ellie’s bedroom door stood open.

The bed was empty.

On the wall, someone had written in red paint:
