Chapter 14 - Fire in the Cottage

Vermont state police reached Grace Holloway’s cabin before the wildfire crossed the eastern ridge.

The cabin itself was already burning.

Firefighters pulled Grace through a rear window.

She suffered smoke inhalation but remained conscious.

Margaret was gone.

The missing trust pages were gone with her.

Grace agreed to speak with Evan from the ambulance.

Her voice sounded weak.

“Thomas knew the crash was coming.”

“How?”

“He received a message from Leah’s stolen phone.

It said she and Ellie were waiting at Saint Matthew’s Church.”

“Daniel sent it.”

“I did not know that then.”

“Why were you in the car?”

“Thomas asked me to bring the evidence to the prosecutor if he became ill.”

“What happened on the road?”

“He became dizzy.

Then the brakes stopped responding.”

Grace closed her eyes.

“Thomas told me to jump.”

“From the moving car?”

“He slowed it by scraping the guardrail.

I opened the passenger door.

I woke beneath the trees.

The car went through the barrier.”

“Why were you removed from the report?”

“Helena’s people found me before the police.”

“Did they hurt you?”

“No.

They told me Thomas was dead and that Leah would lose Ellie if I spoke.”

Grace had carried a sealed package from the crash.

Inside was the second half of the controlling trust, original medical orders and a handwritten statement.

She hid the package and disappeared under her maiden name.

“Where is it now?” Evan asked.

“Margaret took it from the cabin.”

“How did she find you?”

“I contacted Howard.”

Howard lowered his head.

His communication had been monitored.

Grace continued.

“Margaret thinks the trust gives Daniel ten percent of Mercer Global.

She is wrong.”

“What does it give him?”

“Nothing.”

Daniel’s separate trust had been revoked.

Thomas changed it after discovering Daniel participated in the false paternity test.

Instead, the ten percent would pass to Ellie’s trust if Daniel attempted to conceal her identity.

Margaret had spent years committing crimes for an inheritance Daniel had already lost.

“Does she know?” Evan asked.

“She read only the first page.”

“What is on the final page?”

“Thomas’s revocation.”

Margaret would discover the truth as soon as she read the complete document.

Ruiz understood the danger.

“She may blame Ellie for Daniel losing the shares.”

A message arrived from Margaret’s encrypted phone.

It contained a photograph of the full trust pages laid across a table.

Margaret had read them.

The accompanying words were brief.

THOMAS CHOSE THE GIRL.

SO NOW EVAN MUST CHOOSE.

A second image showed Leah’s burned cottage.

The photograph had been taken before the fire.

Beneath the nursery floor, an X had been drawn over the location of the lockbox.

Margaret had known about Leah’s hidden evidence for years.

Martin was not the only person who entered after the kitchen assault.

Margaret removed the original trust and left the copies to burn.

“Why return half?” Leah asked.

“To force us into searching.”

Howard studied the map from the Cross basement.

“She is moving us away from something.”

“What?”

“The estate.”

While police chased Vermont leads and railway stations, Margaret had placed operatives near Mercer properties.

Evan called the estate security office.

A guard answered.

Everything appeared normal.

Then Ellie’s voice came through the background.

Evan froze.

Ellie was supposed to be at the yellow house under protective custody.

“Why is my daughter there?”

The guard sounded confused.

“Mrs. Carter brought her twenty minutes ago.”

Leah stood beside Evan.

“I am here.”

The person entering the estate had impersonated Leah.

Margaret had created another disguise.

The security feed showed a woman wearing Leah’s coat guiding Ellie through the front doors.

Ellie looked hesitant but followed after the woman claimed Evan was waiting inside.

Evan called the yellow-house security team.

They had been found unconscious in the garage.

Margaret had taken Ellie without triggering an alert.

The estate cameras showed the disguised woman entering Sabrina’s hidden room.

She removed the wig.

Margaret Cross looked directly at the camera and smiled.

Then the feed went dark.

Police surrounded the estate.

Evan and Leah entered with Ruiz through the service tunnel.

The hidden room was empty.

A door behind the surveillance wall led toward Thomas’s old library.

There, they found Ellie sitting inside a glass display room that had once protected rare manuscripts.

The door was sealed electronically.

Margaret stood outside holding a pistol.

“She is unharmed,” Margaret said.

“Open the estate voting system.”

“You cannot transfer shares from this room,” Evan answered.

“You can call the interim board.”

“Release her first.”

Margaret pressed a remote.

A thin stream of smoke entered the glass room through an air vent.

Ellie began coughing.

Leah moved forward.

“Stop.”

Margaret aimed at her.

“You stayed silent for four years.

Do not discover courage now.”

Leah did not stop.

“You raised Daniel to believe pain gave him ownership.

Look where that brought him.”

“My son was denied his name.”

“So was my daughter.”

Margaret’s hand shook.

“They are not the same.”

“They are children adults used to punish each other.”

The words landed.

Margaret glanced toward Ellie.

Evan used the moment to activate the emergency fire controls.

The glass door released.

Leah ran inside and lifted Ellie.

Margaret fired.

Ruiz returned fire.

The bullet struck Margaret’s arm.

Police rushed in.

The pistol fell.

As officers restrained her, Margaret laughed.

“You think you saved the girl.”

Evan carried Ellie away from the smoke.

“What does that mean?”

Margaret looked toward the ceiling.

“Ask Helena what Thomas buried under the rose garden.”

Police had already recovered the decoy tube.

Howard returned to the stone bench with forensic specialists.

Beneath the first hiding place, ground radar detected a second metal container.

Inside were no trust papers.

Only a video recorder and a sealed vial of blood.

Thomas appeared on the recording.

“If this is being watched,” he said, “then someone has found Ellie.

The blood belongs to the person who ordered the false prenatal test.

It does not belong to Helena, Sabrina or Daniel.”

Evan looked at Ruiz.

Thomas continued.

“The person responsible has remained invisible because everyone believes she died before Ellie was born.”

The recording ended.

The vial’s label contained one name.

Margaret Cross.

Yet Margaret was alive.

The blood did not match the woman in custody.

The real Margaret Cross had died five years earlier.

The woman who raised Daniel, planned the conspiracy and kidnapped Ellie was someone else.

DNA analysis identified her within hours.

She was Thomas Mercer’s first wife.

A woman the Mercer family believed had died in a boating accident thirty years earlier.

Her name was Vivian Mercer.
