Chapter 4 - The Mother Who Chose Silence

The hospital lockdown began within minutes.

Every exit was sealed.

Security officers searched patient rooms, stairwells and maintenance corridors.

Detective Ruiz obtained access to the surveillance system.

One camera showed Claire Cross entering Leah’s room disguised as a nurse.

Another showed her leaving twelve minutes later.

She pushed Leah in a wheelchair.

Ellie walked beside them holding Claire’s hand.

No one stopped them.

Claire had placed an oxygen mask over Leah’s face and told passing staff she was transferring an unstable patient to intensive care.

The camera outside the loading dock showed them entering an ambulance.

The ambulance belonged to a private transport company owned by a Mercer Global subsidiary.

“Daniel controls the medical contracts,” Evan said.

Ruiz nodded.

“He prepared this before the assault.”

The ambulance’s GPS had been disabled.

Traffic cameras captured it traveling north before disappearing near an industrial district.

Evan called Daniel.

The call went directly to voicemail.

He left no message.

There was nothing he could say that would not sound like panic.

Ruiz instructed officers to search every Mercer-owned medical facility.

Evan contacted his mother.

Helena answered after one ring.

“Evan, I heard Leah was removed from the hospital.”

“You knew before I called.”

“The hospital administrator contacted me.”

“Why would he contact you?”

“I remain chair of the family foundation.”

“Where did Daniel take them?”

A silence followed.

“Daniel did not take anyone.”

“His sister used an ambulance controlled by one of his companies.”

“That does not prove he ordered it.”

“My daughter has been kidnapped.”

Helena inhaled slowly.

“Come to the house.”

“Tell me now.”

“There are things that cannot be discussed over the telephone.”

Evan almost threw the phone.

Instead, he ended the call and turned to Ruiz.

“My mother knows something.”

“Then we go together.”

Helena waited inside the library of the original Mercer residence.

She wore a white silk blouse and charcoal trousers.

Her appearance remained immaculate, but the hand holding her teacup trembled.

Evan placed Thomas’s letter on the table.

“You knew Ellie was mine.”

Helena did not touch the page.

“Your father believed she was.”

“The independent test is conclusive.”

“I learned that later.”

“How much later?”

“After Ellie was born.”

“Then for nearly four years, you knowingly kept my daughter from me.”

“I believed disclosure would damage everyone involved.”

“Everyone except you.”

Helena stood.

“You were thirty-two years old.

Your father was dying.

The company employed tens of thousands of people.

The Takeda merger was keeping three divisions alive.

A public paternity dispute would have destroyed investor confidence.”

“My child was not a public relations problem.”

“I know that now.”

“No.

You know you were caught.”

Helena’s face tightened.

Evan continued.

“You threatened Leah with losing custody.”

“She was unstable.”

“You hired a psychologist who never met her.”

“She had no family support.

No money.

No permanent home.”

“So you created the weaknesses you later used against her.”

Helena looked away.

Evan stepped closer.

“Where are they?”

“I do not know.”

“Daniel knew about the trust.”

“Yes.”

“Sabrina knew.”

“Yes.”

“You knew they were having an affair.”

Helena’s eyes flickered.

“How long?” Evan asked.

“I suspected for six months.”

“And you still pushed me to marry her?”

“I believed marriage would force her to end it.”

Evan stared at his mother.

“You thought a wedding would make dishonest people honest.”

“I thought it would stabilize the family.”

“You mean the company.”

“To me, they were the same.”

“That is why you lost both.”

Helena sank into a chair.

Evan opened Thomas’s amended trust.

“Why did Sabrina need the wedding before I discovered Ellie?”

“If Ellie is legally recognized as your firstborn child, her trust controls eighteen percent of Mercer Global.”

“I know.”

“If Sabrina married you and gave birth to a child believed to be yours, she could exercise influence as the child’s mother.”

“Was she pregnant?”

Helena hesitated.

Evan felt sick.

“Was she?”

“She told me she was trying.”

“With Daniel?”

“I did not know.”

“You knew enough to suspect.”

Helena pressed her fingers against her forehead.

“There is a property.”

“What property?”

“A lake house purchased through a shell corporation.

Daniel said it was an executive retreat.”

“Where?”

Helena wrote an address on a card.

Evan sent it to Ruiz.

Before they could leave, Naomi Price called.

Evan answered.

“I filed emergency motions recognizing your paternity and giving you temporary authority to make decisions for Ellie,” Naomi said.

“Do whatever is necessary.”

“There is a complication.”

“What complication?”

“Sabrina filed a protective petition from custody.”

“She attacked Leah.”

“She claims Leah coached Ellie to make false accusations.

She also claims you became violent after discovering the paternity secret.”

“Where did she obtain an attorney that quickly?”

“Her brother.”

“Marcus Vale is a doctor.”

“He also operates a child welfare consulting group.”

Evan remembered the name.

Marcus Vale had overseen Thomas’s medication after the family physician retired.

“What does Sabrina want?”

“She is asking the court to remove Ellie from both you and Leah until an independent investigation is completed.”

“She has no standing.”

“She claims she has acted as a psychological parent because Ellie frequently stayed at the main house.”

“That is a lie.”

“It does not need to succeed.

It only needs to delay you and undermine Ellie’s interview.”

Evan looked at Helena.

“Marcus handled Dad’s medication.”

She lowered her eyes.

“Part of it.”

“Did he change the prescriptions?”

“I approved adjustments.”

“Knowing Dad had not requested them?”

“He was agitated.”

“He was exposing you.”

Before Helena could answer, one of Evan’s security officers entered.

He carried a tablet displaying live footage from the estate gate.

A black vehicle had stopped outside.

The driver stepped out and placed a package on the ground.

Then the vehicle sped away.

The package contained Leah’s purse.

Her phone was missing.

Inside was a court petition, already signed by Dr. Marcus Vale, stating Ellie was in immediate danger from both biological parents.

Attached was a photograph taken less than ten minutes earlier.

Ellie sat on the floor of an unfamiliar room.

Leah lay unconscious behind her.

A digital clock on the wall showed the current time.

On the reverse side, Daniel had written a message.

SIGN CONTROL OF THE TRUST TO SABRINA.

OR THE NEXT PHOTOGRAPH WILL SHOW ONLY ONE OF THEM ALIVE.

Evan read the sentence once.

Then the lights inside Helena’s house went out.

A child screamed somewhere upstairs.

Helena’s face drained of color.

“That sounded like Ellie.”

Evan ran toward the staircase.

Halfway up, every light returned.

No child was there.

A speaker hidden inside the wall had played the scream.

Ruiz found the device.

It had been installed years earlier as part of the home automation system.

Only three people possessed administrator access.

Evan.

Daniel.

And Helena.

Ruiz looked at her.

“Mrs. Mercer, you are coming with us.”

Helena did not resist.

Before the officers led her away, she caught Evan’s arm.

“The lake house has a boathouse tunnel,” she whispered.

“It opens beneath the western retaining wall.”

“How do you know?”

Helena’s eyes filled with shame.

“Because I helped Daniel build it.”
