Chapter 6 - The Empty Bedroom

The warehouse stretched across six acres of rusted steel and broken windows.
Mercer Pharmaceutical had closed it eleven years earlier after contamination complaints.
Daniel oversaw the shutdown.
Marcus Vale supervised destruction of the medical inventory.
Both men knew the building better than the police approaching it.
Ruiz ordered Evan to remain inside the command vehicle.
He refused.
âMy daughter is in there.â
âThat is why you cannot charge through a door and give Daniel another hostage.â
âHe wants me.â
âHe wants control.â
âThen let him believe he can get it.â
Evan recorded a message.
âDaniel, I will sign.
I am entering alone with the trust documents.
Release Leah and Ellie when I reach the center floor.â
Ruiz sent the video to the waterproof phone.
A response arrived two minutes later.
COME THROUGH THE SOUTH LOADING BAY.
NO POLICE.
Evan wore a concealed microphone and a tracking device.
Officers entered through underground service tunnels while he approached the loading bay carrying an empty document case.
The door opened remotely.
Inside, emergency lights cast red shadows across abandoned machinery.
Danielâs voice came through a speaker.
âWalk straight.â
âLet me see them.â
âKeep walking.â
Evan passed a row of empty laboratory chambers.
He saw fresh footprints in the dust.
One set belonged to a man.
Another to a child.
A third showed dragging marks.
Leah was alive, he told himself.
Daniel needed her.
At the center floor, a freight elevator stood open.
Evan entered.
The doors closed.
The elevator descended.
When it stopped, he found himself inside an underground medical level that did not appear on the building plans.
A narrow corridor led toward a bright room.
Marcus Vale waited at the door.
He wore surgical gloves.
âWhere is Ellie?â
âSafe.â
âWhere is Leah?â
âLess safe.â
Marcus searched Evan for weapons.
He found the microphone.
Instead of destroying it, he smiled.
âLet them listen.â
He opened the door.
Ellie sat on a cot.
Her wrists were not tied, but a leather strap circled one ankle.
When she saw Evan, she began crying.
âDaddy.â
He moved toward her.
Marcus blocked him.
âDocuments first.â
Evan lifted the case.
âRelease them.â
Daniel stepped from behind a partition.
He held a handgun.
His face looked exhausted and feverish.
âYou always believed rules applied to everyone except you,â Daniel said.
âI trusted you.â
âYou used me.â
âYou were my brother in everything except blood.â
The words produced an unexpected reaction.
Danielâs expression twisted.
âYou still do not know.â
âKnow what?â
Marcus looked toward Daniel.
âDo not.â
Daniel laughed.
âWhy protect her now?â
Evan kept his eyes on the gun.
âProtect whom?â
âOur mother.â
The corridor behind him seemed to tilt.
âHelena?â
Danielâs smile held no joy.
âI am her son.â
Evan stared at him.
âThat is impossible.â
âArthur Cross was not my biological father.
Your mother had an affair.
Thomas discovered it when I was sixteen.â
âWhy would he keep you close?â
âBecause he was a better father to me than she was a mother.â
Danielâs voice broke before hardening again.
âHe promised I would have a place in the company.
Then you inherited everything.â
âI did not know.â
âYou never needed to know.
That was the privilege.â
Ellie whimpered.
Evan forced himself to remain focused.
âThis is between us.
Let her go.â
âSign the trust.â
âThe documents in the case cannot transfer voting control without an independent trustee.â
Danielâs hand tightened around the gun.
âYou are lying.â
âYou managed the trust.
You know I am not.â
Marcus opened the case.
It was empty.
Daniel struck Evan across the face with the weapon.
Ellie screamed.
Evan fell against the wall.
âYou came here with nothing.â
âI came for my family.â
âYou always get to say that after someone else pays the price.â
A muffled sound came from the adjoining room.
Leah.
Evan lunged toward the door.
Marcus injected something into his shoulder.
His legs weakened.
He collapsed to one knee.
Ellie fought against the strap.
âDo not hurt Daddy!â
Daniel turned toward her.
âYour father is going to fix everything.â
âI donât like you.â
The simple declaration cut through the room.
Daniel looked at the child as though she had struck him.
Then an alarm sounded.
Police had breached the lower level.
Marcus swore.
Daniel grabbed Ellie and dragged her toward a side exit.
Evan forced himself upright despite the drug spreading through his body.
He tackled Daniel from behind.
The gun slid across the floor.
Marcus ran for it.
Leah appeared in the doorway and kicked the weapon away before he reached it.
Her face was bruised.
Her injured arm hung uselessly, but she used her body to block Marcus.
âYou should have stayed unconscious,â he snarled.
âYou should have chosen a different family.â
He shoved her.
Evan struck Daniel once and reached Ellie.
Before he could free the ankle strap, Daniel pulled a second gun from beneath his jacket.
âStop.â
Every person froze.
Daniel aimed at Evan.
Police shouted from the corridor.
He moved backward, dragging Ellie with him.
A metal door opened behind him.
Beyond it lay the old loading tunnel leading toward the lake.
Daniel forced Ellie into a narrow motorboat.
Helena sat inside with her wrists tied.
Evan stared.
âMother?â
Helenaâs face was streaked with tears.
âDaniel took me from the courthouse.â
Daniel climbed behind the wheel.
He held the weapon near Ellieâs side.
âCome closer and I fire.â
The boat accelerated into the tunnel.
Evan ran after it.
The tunnel opened onto the lake.
Police boats moved from the opposite shore, but Daniel held Ellie in front of him.
No one could shoot safely.
Evan reached the dock.
âDaniel!â
The boat slowed.
âYou found the drive,â Daniel shouted.
âYes.â
âGive me every copy.â
âThe police have them.â
Danielâs face changed.
Sabrina had apparently told him otherwise.
âShe said only one existed.â
âShe is already blaming you.â
âShe would not.â
âShe told the police you stole the money.
She said you manipulated her.â
It was a guess.
Danielâs eyes revealed it had landed.
Helena whispered something to Ellie.
Daniel glanced down.
That moment was enough.
Helena shoved Ellie below the side rail and threw herself across the child.
The gun fired.
The bullet shattered part of the boat.
A police marksman struck Daniel in the shoulder.
The weapon fell into the water.
The boat spun.
Evan jumped from the dock.
The lake was freezing.
He caught the side of the boat and pulled himself aboard.
Ellie screamed his name.
He lifted her against his chest.
âI knew you would come,â she sobbed.
âI will always come.â
Daniel lay bleeding near the controls.
Officers boarded and restrained him.
He looked at Evan.
âYou still donât understand what Sabrina found.â
âWhat?â
Daniel laughed weakly.
âThomas thought the trust was the crime.â
Police pulled him away.
Helena handed Evan Ellieâs stuffed rabbit.
âHe kept searching this.â
Ellie wiped her face.
âThe drive isnât in there anymore.â
Ruiz looked at her.
âWhat do you mean?â
âThe big red one was in my sweater.â
âWas there another?â
Ellie nodded.
âThe little red one.â
âWhere did you put it?â
Ellie pointed toward the crooked stitching over the rabbitâs chest.
âInside Mr. Bunnyâs heart.â
Ruiz opened the seam.
A second storage device slid into her hand.
It contained financial records, hidden-camera footage and dozens of audio files.
The final file showed Sabrina standing beside Daniel in Evanâs study.
âWhen Evan marries me, I control his medical decisions,â she said.
âWhen my baby is born, everyone will believe it is his first child.â
Daniel asked, âWhat about Ellie?â
Sabrina lifted her champagne glass.
âIf Leah refuses to disappear, the girl becomes a problem.â
âWhat kind of problem?â
May you like
Sabrina stared directly toward the hidden camera.
âThe kind that does not survive long enough to testify.â
