Chapter 5 - The First Courtroom

Police entered the lake house before dawn.

They found restraints, medical supplies, false identification cards and copies of the Mercer trust.

They did not find Leah or Ellie.

The boathouse tunnel ended at a narrow channel leading into the main lake.

A security camera recorded Daniel leaving in a covered boat three hours earlier.

Claire sat beside him.

Two figures lay on the deck beneath blankets.

Evan watched the footage repeatedly.

One figure was adult-sized.

The other was small.

“They are alive,” Ruiz said.

“You cannot know that.”

“Daniel needs leverage.

He would not discard it before you sign.”

The reasoning was cold.

Evan forced himself to accept it.

Search teams began checking every marina and private dock within fifty miles.

The court refused to postpone Sabrina’s emergency custody hearing.

Naomi argued that the petitioner was under arrest for assault and connected to an active kidnapping investigation.

Sabrina’s attorneys claimed she had been framed.

Judge Eleanor Ward ordered everyone to appear by video or in person.

Sabrina attended from a secure courthouse room.

She wore a pale blue suit instead of jail clothing because she had not yet been formally arraigned on the kidnapping conspiracy.

Her face appeared composed.

Only the tension in her jaw revealed fear.

Naomi stood beside Evan.

“The court is not deciding permanent custody today,” she reminded him.

“It is deciding who has temporary authority while Ellie is missing.”

“She belongs with Leah.”

“Say that when asked.”

Sabrina’s attorney opened by portraying Leah as a manipulative employee who concealed paternity for financial gain.

He introduced the two-hundred-fifty-thousand-dollar agreement.

He produced emails from an account bearing Leah’s name.

One message described Ellie as “the most valuable secret in the Mercer family.”

Another proposed selling the story to a tabloid for five million dollars.

Evan’s hands tightened beneath the table.

“They are forged.”

Naomi whispered, “We will prove it.”

The attorney then introduced a report from Dr. Marcus Vale.

Marcus claimed Ellie’s vocabulary during the forensic interview was too advanced for her age.

He argued Leah had coached the child to repeat phrases about trusts and inheritance.

Rachel Monroe testified by video.

She dismantled his conclusion calmly.

“Children repeat language they overhear without understanding the legal meaning,” she explained.

“Ellie did not define a trust.

She reported hearing adults use the word.”

“Could she have been coached?” Sabrina’s attorney asked.

“Any child can be coached.

Her account did not display the patterns normally associated with rehearsal.”

“What patterns?”

“Memorized sequencing.

Adult emotional language.

Resistance to neutral correction.

Ellie displayed none.”

The attorney attempted to discredit Rachel’s interview because Evan had watched from another room.

Rachel responded that he had no contact with Ellie during the questioning.

Then Detective Ruiz testified about the kitchen assault, the hidden flash drive and Daniel’s message.

Sabrina’s attorney objected to every reference connecting his client to Daniel.

Judge Ward allowed most of it.

Naomi called Evan.

He took the oath.

“Did you know Ellie was your biological daughter before the kitchen incident?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because people I trusted intercepted every attempt Leah made to tell me.”

“Do you blame Leah?”

“Yes.”

A murmur moved through the room.

Naomi’s expression did not change.

“For what?”

“For allowing fear to remain between us for four years.”

“Do you believe that makes her an unfit mother?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because every choice she made was centered on keeping Ellie safe.

Some choices were wrong.

None were selfish.”

Sabrina watched him through the video screen.

Naomi continued.

“If Ellie is recovered today, where should she live?”

“With Leah.”

“Not with you?”

“With both of us eventually, if that transition is healthy.

But removing her from the only parent she has known would punish the child for what adults did.”

The judge studied him.

“Mr. Mercer, you possess wealth and influence beyond most parents appearing in this courtroom.

Why should the court believe you will not use it to control Ms. Carter?”

“Because that is exactly what my family did to her.

I will not repeat it.”

The testimony appeared to move the judge.

Then Sabrina’s attorney stood.

“Mr. Mercer, is my client pregnant?”

Evan looked toward Naomi.

“I do not know.”

Sabrina rose on the screen.

“Yes, Your Honor.”

She placed one hand over her abdomen.

“I learned three weeks ago.”

The courtroom fell silent.

“The child is Evan’s.”

“That is false,” Evan said.

Judge Ward struck the desk.

“Mr. Mercer, you will allow counsel to proceed.”

Sabrina’s attorney presented a preliminary laboratory report.

It stated that Evan could not be excluded as the father.

Naomi requested independent testing.

The judge ordered it.

Sabrina began crying.

“I did not attack Leah,” she said.

“I tried to stop her from leaving with stolen company records.

She fell during the struggle.”

Detective Ruiz’s photographs showed otherwise.

Still, Sabrina continued.

“Leah discovered my pregnancy.

She knew my child would be Evan’s first recognized heir.

She coached Ellie to claim paternity so she could seize the trust first.”

Naomi introduced Thomas Mercer’s independent test.

The judge reviewed it.

Sabrina’s attorney argued the document had an incomplete chain of custody.

While the attorneys fought, a courthouse officer entered and whispered to Ruiz.

Ruiz immediately stood.

She handed Evan a note.

BOAT LOCATED.

ONE ADULT FOUND.

NO CHILD.

Evan’s vision narrowed.

He left the courtroom without permission.

Ruiz followed.

The boat had been discovered drifting near an abandoned fishing pier.

Claire Cross was unconscious inside.

There was blood on the deck, though investigators could not yet determine whose it was.

Leah and Ellie were missing.

A waterproof phone lay beneath the driver’s seat.

Daniel had recorded a video.

He stood in front of a white wall with Ellie beside him.

Leah was not visible.

“You have one hour,” Daniel said.

“Sign temporary control of Ellie’s trust to Sabrina.

Release the documents to the press stating Leah fabricated the paternity claim.

And order police to withdraw.”

Ellie stared toward someone beyond the camera.

She looked terrified.

Daniel continued.

“If you refuse, Leah goes into the water first.”

Evan stepped closer to the screen.

Ellie suddenly lifted her hand.

She touched her left ear, then her chin, then her chest.

Three movements.

Evan did not understand.

Rachel Monroe, who had followed from the courtroom, did.

“That is a signal Leah taught her.”

“What does it mean?”

Rachel watched the child repeat the movements.

“Listen.

Below.

Heart.”

Evan looked at Ruiz.

Ellie pointed downward once more.

“There is something beneath her,” Rachel said.

Ruiz enlarged the final frame.

Behind Ellie’s shoes, almost hidden by shadow, was a metal plate marked with a serial number.

The number belonged to an old Mercer Global freight elevator.

There were twelve such elevators.

Eleven had been dismantled.

The twelfth remained inside an abandoned pharmaceutical warehouse.

The same warehouse where Thomas Mercer’s altered medication had been manufactured.

As officers prepared to move, the courthouse officer ran toward them again.

“Mr. Mercer, the judge has issued a temporary custody ruling.”

Evan barely heard him.

“What ruling?”

“Until Ellie is located and the allegations are investigated, neither biological parent may exercise sole custody.”

“Then who can?”

The officer handed Naomi the order.

The court-appointed temporary guardian was Dr. Marcus Vale.

And according to the location data from Marcus’s phone, he was already inside the abandoned warehouse with Ellie.
