Chapter 9 - The Woman Behind the Driver

Helena requested a private meeting after hearing the voicemail had been recovered.

The district attorney refused privacy.

She was questioned in a recorded interview room with her attorney present.

Evan watched from behind the glass.

Leah sat beside him.

Helena admitted she had known about Sabrina’s hidden room.

She claimed she discovered it only weeks earlier.

She also admitted removing the laptop after the kitchen assault.

“Why?” the prosecutor asked.

“I believed it contained documents about Daniel.”

“What documents?”

Helena looked toward the observation window.

“His birth records.”

Evan felt Leah’s hand tighten around the edge of her chair.

The prosecutor continued.

“Why would Daniel’s birth records matter?”

Helena’s attorney advised her not to answer.

She ignored him.

“Because I am his biological mother.”

The admission changed the shape of the entire conspiracy.

Helena explained that thirty-eight years earlier, she had an affair with Arthur Cross, Thomas Mercer’s business partner.

When Daniel was born, Arthur’s wife agreed to raise him.

Thomas discovered the truth when Daniel was sixteen.

He never exposed Helena.

Instead, he helped Daniel attend college and later offered him a position at Mercer Global.

“Did Daniel know?” the prosecutor asked.

“Not until eight years ago.”

“Who told him?”

“Sabrina.”

Helena closed her eyes.

“She found letters Thomas kept.”

Evan remembered Daniel’s resentment at the warehouse.

It had not begun with money.

It had begun with a hidden identity.

Sabrina had taken that wound and sharpened it.

“Did you destroy the laptop to hide Daniel’s birth?” the prosecutor asked.

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“In the old greenhouse.”

“Was the hard drive intact?”

“I burned the entire machine.”

Investigators searched the greenhouse.

They found melted components inside an iron stove.

A digital recovery specialist said some data might survive.

While that work began, Martin Shaw requested a plea agreement.

Helena’s longtime driver admitted following Leah during her pregnancy.

He photographed medical appointments and reported everyone she contacted.

He intercepted her in Mercer Global’s lobby twice.

He delivered the custody threats after Ellie was born.

“Who instructed you?” Ruiz asked.

“Mrs. Mercer at first.”

“And later?”

“Sabrina.”

Martin admitted entering Leah’s cottage after the kitchen assault and burning her documents.

He said Sabrina told him Helena wanted everything destroyed.

“Did you confirm that?” Ruiz asked.

“No.”

“Why obey Sabrina?”

“She knew about the car.”

“What car?”

Martin lowered his head.

“Thomas Mercer’s.”

Evan leaned closer to the observation glass.

Martin explained that Sabrina paid him to enter Thomas’s garage before the crash.

She claimed she wanted a tracking device installed.

Instead, she instructed him to damage a brake line.

“Did Helena know?”

“She was there.”

“What did she say?”

“She told Sabrina not to do anything reckless.”

“Did she stop you?”

“No.”

“Did you know Thomas could die?”

Martin’s mouth tightened.

“I told myself the brakes would weaken slowly.

I thought he would notice.”

“Did you inspect them after the crash?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Daniel paid me to stay silent.”

The prosecutor asked what evidence remained.

Martin described a maintenance invoice stored inside Sabrina’s laptop.

He also said the hidden room automatically recorded audio.

The damaged hard drive became essential.

Without it, the murder case depended on Martin, a man bargaining for a reduced sentence.

That evening, Helena was released on bail under strict conditions.

She arrived at the estate without a driver.

Evan met her in the front hall.

“What do you want?”

“To see Ellie.”

“No.”

“I saved her at the lake.”

“You also created the fear that kept her from me.”

Helena’s face crumpled.

“I know.”

The admission surprised him.

Leah entered behind Evan.

Helena turned toward her.

“I came to apologize.”

“You threatened to take my baby,” Leah said.

“Yes.”

“You showed me false emails.”

“Yes.”

“You knew the paternity test was wrong.”

“Not at first.

Later, yes.”

“You watched me raise her twenty yards from her father.”

“Yes.”

“Why should your apology matter?”

“It should not.”

Helena reached into her handbag.

“I brought this because the truth matters even when forgiveness does not.”

She placed a black notebook on the table.

Inside were payment records, dates, account numbers and brief descriptions.

Payments to Northstar Diagnostics.

Payments to Martin.

Payments authorized by Daniel.

Medication changes signed by Marcus.

Helena had documented nearly everything.

“You kept records to protect yourself,” Evan said.

“Yes.”

“At least that is honest.”

“I have spent my life calling cowardice prudence.”

A sound came from the staircase.

Ellie stood halfway down.

“Grandma?”

Helena covered her mouth.

Ellie descended slowly.

“Are you going away?”

“For a while.”

“Because you lied?”

“Yes.”

“Did you save me on the boat?”

“Yes.”

Ellie looked toward Evan.

“Can I hug her?”

He could not refuse.

Helena knelt but did not reach first.

Ellie wrapped her arms around her.

“Thank you for not letting the loud thing hurt me.”

Helena began to cry.

Ellie stepped back.

“You still have to tell the truth.”

“I will.”

Every television in the house suddenly changed to a breaking-news broadcast.

Sabrina stood on the courthouse steps surrounded by attorneys.

She had obtained temporary release for a medical examination.

One hand rested over her stomach.

“I have remained silent while Evan Mercer and Leah Carter spread vicious lies,” she said.

“But I will not remain silent while my unborn child is erased.”

A reporter asked whether Evan was the father.

Sabrina faced the camera.

“Yes.

This baby is Evan Mercer’s son.”

Naomi called seconds later.

“She filed a petition demanding recognition of the unborn child’s inheritance rights.”

“The child is Daniel’s,” Evan said.

“We assume that.”

“She was sleeping with him.”

“That does not exclude you.”

Evan looked at Leah.

Their relationship with Sabrina had continued until several months earlier.

The timing was possible.

Naomi continued.

“Sabrina submitted a prenatal paternity test from St. Matthew’s Genetics Center.”

“Is it legitimate?”

“The laboratory is independent.”

“What does it say?”

“That you cannot be excluded as the father.”

Helena sat down heavily.

“That cannot be true.”

Naomi’s voice became more careful.

“There is something else.

The fetal DNA shows a hereditary blood disorder associated with the Mercer family.”

Evan looked at Helena.

She understood first.

“If Daniel is my son,” she whispered, “then the disorder could come through him.”

Naomi agreed.

“The court has ordered a supervised test.”

A guard entered holding the black notebook.

“One page has been cut out.”

Helena stared at it.

“What page?”

The missing section covered the week before Thomas’s death.

A faint impression remained on the paper beneath it.

Investigators shaded the page with graphite.

The writing became visible.

MARCUS CONFIRMED PREGNANCY PLAN.

DANIEL IS NOT THE ONLY POSSIBLE FATHER.

Evan looked at his mother.

“Who else?”

Helena’s lips trembled.

Before she could answer, a car exploded outside the estate gates.

Security alarms screamed.

The front windows shook.

When guards reached the gatehouse, they found the remains of Marcus Vale’s vehicle.

A body sat behind the wheel.

The face was burned beyond immediate recognition.

On the passenger seat lay the missing page from Helena’s notebook.
