Chapter 7 - The Red Flash Drive

The second flash drive transformed the investigation from a kidnapping case into a criminal conspiracy spanning four years.

Sabrina’s bail was revoked.

Daniel underwent surgery under armed guard.

Marcus Vale was arrested inside the warehouse after attempting to flee through a chemical storage tunnel.

Claire Cross regained consciousness on the abandoned boat and requested an attorney before answering questions.

Helena was taken to the hospital for shock and dehydration.

Ellie refused to leave Leah’s side.

Leah’s fractured shoulder had been injured again during the kidnapping, but imaging showed no additional break.

She required overnight observation.

Evan sat beside the bed while Ellie slept curled against her mother.

For the first time since the kitchen, the room was quiet.

There were no officers asking questions.

No judges waiting.

No weapons.

Only the three of them and the soft sound of Ellie breathing.

Evan looked at Leah.

“You saved her twice.”

“I am her mother.”

“You say that as though it required no courage.”

“It required fear.”

Leah brushed a strand of hair from Ellie’s face.

“Courage is what people call it afterward.”

Evan wanted to reach for Leah’s hand.

He did not.

Too much remained between them.

“I watched the forensic interview,” he said.

Leah nodded.

“She said you told her not to tell me.”

“I did.”

“Did she know why?”

“Only that I believed it was dangerous.”

“She was afraid of my mother.”

“So was I.”

Evan looked away.

“I am angry with you.”

“I know.”

“I am also angry with myself.”

“You didn’t know.”

“I knew no one could reach me without passing through Sabrina.

I knew my mother controlled the estate.

I knew Daniel handled every private financial question.

I called that efficiency.”

Leah’s expression softened.

“You were trying to save the company.”

“I was trying to prove I deserved it.”

The distinction felt important.

He had allowed ambition to become an excuse for absence.

His father had warned him.

Thomas often said that a company could consume whatever a man refused to defend.

Evan assumed he meant health or marriage.

He had not realized his father meant identity.

The following morning, Naomi arrived with a court-ordered paternity test.

The result was conclusive.

Evan Mercer was Ellie’s biological father.

Judge Ward dismissed Sabrina’s temporary guardianship petition and granted Evan shared legal custody.

Physical custody remained with Leah while the family adjusted.

Evan had requested that arrangement.

Leah stared at the order.

“You could have asked the court to place her with you.”

“I could have.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Because I refuse to become another Mercer who uses money to separate a child from her mother.”

Leah looked down.

“Thank you.”

“You should not have to thank me for doing what is right.”

“People rarely do what is right when they have enough power to avoid it.”

The comment was not intended as cruelty.

Evan still felt it.

Mercer Global’s board convened an emergency meeting that afternoon.

The flash drive showed sixty-eight million dollars routed through shell companies, consulting firms and charities controlled by Sabrina and Marcus.

Several transfers bore Daniel’s authorization.

Some carried Helena’s digital approval.

The directors demanded Evan take temporary leave.

They argued his family crisis created unacceptable instability.

Evan attended by video from the hospital.

One director spoke about investor confidence.

Another warned that public recognition of Ellie could trigger a voting battle over Thomas’s trust.

A third suggested delaying legal recognition until the audit was complete.

Evan listened.

Then he removed the silver chairman’s pin from his jacket.

“My daughter’s existence is not a financial event you may postpone.”

“Evan,” a director said, “no one is suggesting—”

“You are suggesting exactly that.”

He placed the pin on the table.

“I am appointing an independent interim chair.

I am waiving executive confidentiality over every communication involving Daniel Cross, Sabrina Vale, Helena Mercer and the family trust.”

The board erupted.

“You could lose control of the company.”

“I already lost four years with my daughter.

I will not lose another day protecting people who knew enough to ask questions and chose not to.”

He authorized a forensic audit and ended the call.

For the first time since inheriting Mercer Global, he felt lighter.

The relief did not last.

Detective Ruiz entered carrying an analysis from the second flash drive.

Most files concerned financial fraud.

One folder was labeled T.M. MEDICATION.

Inside were prescription changes from Thomas Mercer’s final months.

The doses had been altered repeatedly.

The physician signatures were forged.

The orders originated from Daniel’s office.

An audio recording accompanied the records.

Sabrina’s voice came first.

“The old man is asking too many questions.”

Daniel answered, “He will not stop.”

Marcus said, “The new dosage will make him confused and unsteady.”

Then Helena spoke.

“No one is harming Thomas.

We are adjusting his care until the merger closes.”

Sabrina laughed softly.

“And if he does not survive that long?”

No one answered.

The recording ended.

Evan stared at the screen.

His father had died when his car left a mountain road during heavy rain.

The official report blamed speed and poor visibility.

Ruiz placed another document beside the medication file.

It was a maintenance report from Thomas’s vehicle.

The original report showed no mechanical problems.

The version stored on the flash drive contained an additional note.

BRAKE PRESSURE LOSS DETECTED.

INSPECTION CANCELED BY D. CROSS.

Evan looked at Helena, who had just been escorted into the room for questioning.

“Did you know?”

She stared at the page.

“I knew his medication had changed.”

“Did you know about the brakes?”

“No.”

“Did you know Sabrina wanted him silent?”

Helena’s lips parted.

Before she could answer, Ruiz’s phone rang.

The detective listened, then looked at Evan.

“We found the mechanic who inspected Thomas’s car.”

“What did he say?”

“He says Daniel canceled the repair.”

“That is already in the report.”

Ruiz’s expression hardened.

“He also says someone came to the garage the night before the crash and accessed the vehicle.”

“Who?”

“He identified her from a photograph.”

Ruiz placed the image on the table.

It showed Sabrina.

Helena closed her eyes.

Then the mechanic sent a second photograph from the garage camera.

Sabrina had not arrived alone.
