Chapter 12 - The Price of Protection

The estate entered complete lockdown.
Security officers searched every room while police sealed the grounds.
Leah had been released after Claireâs confession cleared her of the bank withdrawal.
She stood beside Evan inside the security center, pale but controlled.
âEllie was with the therapist ten minutes ago.â
The therapist had been found unconscious in the upstairs playroom.
A cloth containing anesthetic lay nearby.
Security cameras showed no stranger entering the house.
Marcus had come through Sabrinaâs hidden ventilation network.
The passage extended farther than anyone realized.
Blueprints revealed connections to the library, the east wing and the old service tunnels beneath the estate.
âHe has studied this house for years,â Ruiz said.
âHe helped manage Thomasâs medical care.
No one questioned why he was here.â
Evan searched the monitors.
A camera in the basement flickered.
For one second, Ellie appeared.
She was walking beside a man wearing a dark jacket.
Marcus.
The feed died.
Police entered the basement.
They found a hidden door behind the wine storage.
The passage descended toward Leahâs cottage.
Marcus had moved Ellie into the tunnels.
A voice came through the house intercom.
âEvan.â
Marcus sounded calm.
âYou have something that belongs to Sabrina.â
âThe trust amendment?â
âThe original genetic provision.â
âLet Ellie go.â
âBring the document to the cottage.â
âPolice have copies.â
âNo, they do not.â
Ruiz checked the evidence bag.
The trust amendment inside was a photocopy.
Someone had switched it during the confusion in the garden.
Howard must have carried the true original.
Marcus believed Evan possessed it.
âWhere is Howard?â Evan asked.
âIn the hospital.â
âHe gave you the document?â
âNo.â
The intercom went silent.
Leah stepped closer.
âHe will search Ellie.â
Evan understood.
If Howard had hidden the original with the person Thomas intended to protect, Marcus might believe Ellie carried it.
They ran toward the cottage.
Smoke appeared inside the windows.
Marcus had started a fire.
Firefighters entered through the front while police approached the tunnel exit.
Evan heard Ellie screaming beneath the floor.
He broke a window and climbed inside before Ruiz could stop him.
Heat rolled through the room.
The nursery floor was burning.
He grabbed a chair and struck the boards until one split.
Below was a narrow crawlspace.
Ellie crouched beside a metal lockbox.
Marcus stood behind her holding a knife.
âStay back.â
Evan lowered the chair.
âTake the trust.
Let her come to me.â
âYou do not have it.â
âNo.â
Marcus pressed the blade closer to Ellieâs shoulder.
âHoward hid it here.â
Leah entered through the broken window despite the smoke.
âI know where.â
Marcus looked at her.
âShow me.â
âIt is inside the box.â
âThe box is locked.â
Leah removed a key from the chain around her neck.
âThis belonged to Thomas.â
Evan stared.
She had never mentioned it.
Leah lowered herself into the crawlspace.
âLet Ellie climb out first.â
Marcus shook his head.
âYou open it.â
Leah inserted the key.
The lockbox contained Ellieâs birth bracelet, letters from Thomas, copies of the false prenatal report and a sealed document.
Marcus seized the envelope.
He opened it.
The trust amendment was not inside.
Only a handwritten note.
If you are reading this, you valued ownership more than the child.
You have already lost.
Marcusâs expression changed.
Ellie kicked backward.
Her heel struck his shin.
Leah pulled her aside.
Evan jumped into the crawlspace and tackled Marcus.
The knife fell.
Fire spread across the ceiling.
Marcus fought with desperate strength.
He struck Evanâs injured shoulder and reached for the blade.
Leah kicked it into the flames.
Police entered through the tunnel and dragged Marcus away.
Evan lifted Ellie.
Firefighters guided them outside seconds before the nursery ceiling collapsed.
The cottage burned, but the lockbox survived.
Thomasâs letters provided independent proof that Leah had attempted to reach Evan.
The false prenatal report contained Marcusâs handwritten sample alteration.
The criminal case strengthened.
Yet the true trust amendment remained missing.
Howard regained consciousness at the hospital.
He explained that Thomas never placed the original beneath the garden bench.
The tube contained a decoy.
âThen where is it?â Evan asked.
Howard looked toward Ellie.
âThomas gave it to Leah.â
Leah shook her head.
âNo.â
âHe placed it inside the payment agreement Helena forced you to sign.â
The original agreement had been destroyed in the cottage fireplace.
Martin had burned it after the kitchen assault.
Or so everyone believed.
Leah remembered signing two copies.
Helena kept one.
Thomas secretly replaced Leahâs copy with a thicker envelope.
Leah stored it beneath the nursery floor.
The lockbox contained only the outer pages.
Someone had removed the trust amendment before the fire.
Security footage from the cottage showed Martin entering after the assault.
A second figure followed him.
The person wore a long coat and never faced the camera.
Martin burned the visible documents.
The second figure opened the lockbox.
Helena watched the footage.
âI know that coat.â
âWhose?â Ruiz asked.
âDanielâs adoptive mother.â
Margaret Cross had supposedly died five years earlier.
Daniel and Claire attended a closed-casket funeral.
No independent death record existed.
Howard whispered, âShe is alive.â
Margaret Cross had raised Daniel.
She had also spent decades watching Helenaâs wealth from outside the family.
If she possessed the original trust amendment, she controlled the evidence that could protect Ellieâs inheritance or destroy it.
Ruiz issued a nationwide alert.
Before police could locate her, the estate received a package.
Inside was the missing amendment.
It had been torn in half.
One half remained absent.
A note accompanied it.
RELEASE DANIEL.
TRANSFER TEN PERCENT OF MERCER GLOBAL.
OR THE SECOND HALF BURNS WITH THE WOMAN WHO RAISED YOUR BROTHER.
Attached was a photograph of Margaret Cross tied to a chair.
Behind her stood Claire.
The kidnapping victim and supposed kidnapper looked directly into the camera.
Then Margaret smiled.
May you like
It was not the expression of a frightened hostage.
It was the smile of the person giving the orders.
