Chapter 15 - The Witness Nobody Expected

Evan read the DNA report until the words stopped making sense.

Helena had raised him.

Thomas had always been his father.

Every official document identified Helena as his mother.

Yet the blood recovered from the garden and the woman arrested under Margaret Cross’s identity were genetically connected to Evan.

Vivian Mercer was his biological mother.

Helena confirmed the truth during a recorded interview.

“Thomas was married to Vivian before me,” she explained.

“They had a son.”

“Me.”

“Yes.”

“Why does my birth certificate name you?”

“Vivian disappeared when you were eighteen months old.

Her boat was found overturned.

No body was recovered.”

“You adopted me?”

“Privately.

Thomas believed protecting you from scandal mattered more than accurate records.”

Evan laughed bitterly.

“Of course he did.”

Helena looked wounded.

“I loved you as my son.”

“You lied to me as your son.”

“Yes.”

“What happened to Vivian?”

“Thomas believed she drowned.”

“She did not.”

“No.”

Vivian had resurfaced years later under the identity of Margaret Cross.

The real Margaret was dying from cancer.

She and Vivian had known each other in college.

Vivian assumed her identity after Margaret’s death.

She raised Daniel while secretly watching the Mercer family from a distance.

“Why raise Daniel?” Evan asked.

“Because she wanted a child she could shape against Thomas.”

“She abandoned me and chose him?”

Helena shook her head.

“She believed Thomas stole you from her.”

“What really happened?”

“Vivian was unstable.

She attempted to take you out of the country.

Thomas obtained an emergency custody order.

She fled before the hearing.”

“Did you help him?”

“Yes.”

“You erased her.”

“We believed she was dangerous.”

Vivian’s actions now supported that belief.

Still, Evan could not ignore the pattern.

Every generation of the Mercer family solved fear by removing someone’s identity.

Vivian.

Daniel.

Ellie.

Silence had become inheritance.

Vivian recovered from the gunshot wound under armed guard.

She refused to speak with prosecutors.

She asked to see Evan.

Ruiz advised against it.

Leah said the decision belonged to him.

He entered the hospital interview room alone.

Vivian studied his face.

“You have Thomas’s eyes.”

“Ellie has mine.”

A faint smile appeared.

“I know.”

“You watched her for years.”

“I protected her.”

“You helped Sabrina hide her.”

“I needed Sabrina close to Daniel.”

“You allowed her to threaten a child.”

“I underestimated her.”

“You ordered my death.”

“I ordered preparations.

There is a difference.”

“No.

There is only a crime that failed.”

Vivian’s composure cracked.

“Thomas stole you.”

“He raised me.”

“He replaced me with Helena.”

“You abandoned me.”

“I fled because Thomas controlled every judge and attorney.”

Her words echoed Leah’s history.

For one dangerous moment, Evan saw the possibility that Vivian had once been another frightened mother crushed by Mercer power.

Then he remembered the smoke entering the room with Ellie.

“What happened to you does not justify what you did.”

Vivian looked away.

“That is what Thomas said.”

“Where is the final trust?”

“The police have it.”

“What else did Dad leave?”

Vivian’s eyes returned to him.

“A recording from Singapore.”

Evan’s chest tightened.

“What recording?”

“One showing Leah knew where you were.”

Sabrina’s defense team introduced it at trial the next day.

The footage showed Leah entering the lobby of Evan’s Singapore hotel two weeks after learning she was pregnant.

She approached security.

After a brief conversation, she handed an envelope to an officer and left.

Sabrina’s attorney argued that Leah had direct access to Evan and chose not to use it.

He presented a written statement claiming Leah identified herself as a former employee seeking money.

Leah admitted traveling to Singapore.

Evan felt the old wound reopen.

“You told me you could not reach me.”

“I could not.”

“You were inside my hotel.”

“For six minutes.”

“Why did you never tell me?”

“Because I failed.”

The judge granted a recess.

Inside a private room, Leah explained.

She sold her mother’s wedding ring to buy the ticket.

She waited outside Evan’s conference center for nine hours.

His car used an underground exit.

She called his room.

Sabrina answered and claimed Evan knew about the pregnancy.

“She said you wanted nothing to do with me.”

“She lied.”

“I know now.”

“You should have kept trying.”

Leah’s face hardened.

“I was pregnant, alone and thousands of miles from home.

I had been shown emails, a paternity test and instructions bearing your name.

What would you have done?”

Evan had no answer.

“You keep judging the woman I was using information you have now,” Leah said.

The truth of it silenced him.

“I am sorry.”

She looked surprised.

“I built a life where no one could reach me without passing through people I trusted.

Sabrina used the wall.

But I built it.”

Naomi’s investigators located the Singapore security officer.

Peter Lang agreed to testify remotely.

He remembered Leah because Sabrina paid him ten thousand dollars to stop her from reaching Evan.

The written statement had been altered.

His original report said Leah repeatedly mentioned “Evan’s baby.”

Archived loading-dock footage showed Sabrina taking Leah’s envelope.

Inside was an ultrasound image.

Sabrina tore it into pieces and dropped it into a trash bin.

Then she entered Evan’s suite and told him there were no personal messages.

The footage played before the jury.

Sabrina’s face remained expressionless.

The prosecutor asked why she destroyed the photograph.

Her attorney advised silence.

Sabrina ignored him.

“She would have ruined everything.”

The courtroom froze.

Sabrina continued.

“Evan was closing the largest merger of his career.

Thomas was dying.

Helena needed stability.

Then Leah arrived expecting the entire family to rearrange itself around a pregnancy.”

The judge ordered her to stop.

Sabrina laughed.

“You want the truth?

Everyone chose the company.

I was only the one honest enough to benefit.”

Her attorney requested a mistrial.

The judge denied it.

Outside court, Daniel’s attorney approached Naomi.

Daniel was prepared to testify.

He would identify Sabrina as the person who ordered Thomas’s death.

He would explain the plan involving the unborn child.

But he demanded one condition.

Helena had to acknowledge publicly that he was her biological son.

If she refused, he would withdraw cooperation.

Evan looked toward his mother.

Helena had spent nearly four decades hiding Daniel’s identity.

Now the murder case depended on whether she could speak the truth before the world.

She agreed.

Before court resumed, Vivian requested an emergency meeting with the prosecutor.

She offered to testify against Sabrina.

In exchange, she wanted the kidnapping charge involving Ellie dismissed.

Ruiz refused.

Vivian smiled.

“Then you will never know who actually ordered the hockey-stick attack.”

Evan stared at her.

“I watched Sabrina swing.”

“Yes.”

“But Sabrina did not enter that kitchen intending to hurt Leah.”

“Then why was she carrying a weapon?”

“Because someone told her Ellie had found evidence proving the baby was not Evan’s.”

“Who?”

Vivian leaned back.

“The same person who sent Daniel to kidnap them.”

“Daniel admitted Sabrina ordered it.”

“Daniel admitted what he believed.”

Vivian slid a phone across the table.

It contained a message sent to Sabrina minutes before the assault.

ELLIE HAS THE DRIVE.

LEAH IS TAKING HER TO POLICE.

STOP THEM BEFORE THEY LEAVE.

The sender used Daniel’s number.

The message had not come from Daniel’s phone.

It came from Helena’s.

Evan turned toward the woman who had raised him.

Helena stared at the screen.

“I did not send that.”

Vivian smiled.

“Then someone else had access to every Mercer device.”

The courtroom doors opened.

Howard Mercer entered under federal protection.

He carried a file Thomas had mailed before his death.

Inside was a photograph of the person who controlled the family surveillance network.

The face belonged to Naomi Price.
