Chapter 16 - The Edited Truth

Naomi did not run.

She looked at Howard’s photograph and asked to see the original.

Ruiz immediately removed her weapon and placed Naomi under temporary detention.

The photograph showed Naomi entering Sabrina’s hidden surveillance room three years earlier.

The timestamp was authentic.

Naomi admitted she knew the room existed.

She denied controlling it.

“Thomas asked me to investigate Sabrina,” she said.

“Why did you never tell Evan?” Ruiz demanded.

“Because Thomas believed anyone openly connected to him would be watched.”

“You represented the family.”

“I also represented Thomas privately.”

Evan stared at her.

“You had evidence Leah was trying to contact me.”

“Not enough to prove the entire conspiracy.”

“You needed no proof to tell me a woman was trying to reach me.”

Naomi absorbed the accusation.

“You are right.”

“Did you send the message that triggered the kitchen assault?”

“No.”

“Did you clone Daniel’s number?”

“No.”

Howard opened Thomas’s file.

Inside were network access logs.

Five administrator accounts controlled the Mercer surveillance system.

Evan.

Daniel.

Helena.

Sabrina.

And an encrypted account labeled COUNSEL.

Naomi’s law firm had created it.

She explained that Thomas requested an emergency access account so she could preserve evidence.

Someone later stole the credentials.

“Who knew the password?” Ruiz asked.

“Thomas and me.”

“Was it written anywhere?”

“In a sealed instruction file.”

“Where?”

“Thomas’s office.”

Sabrina or Daniel could have found it.

Vivian could have taken it.

Helena might have known.

The photograph did not prove Naomi controlled the attack.

It proved she withheld information that might have exposed the conspiracy sooner.

Naomi resigned as Evan’s attorney.

“I cannot represent you while I am part of the investigation.”

“Who can I trust?” Evan asked.

Naomi looked toward Leah.

“The people who tell you when they have failed.”

It was not a satisfying answer.

It was perhaps the only honest one.

A new attorney, Camille Brooks, took over the criminal coordination.

The trial continued with Helena’s testimony.

She publicly acknowledged Daniel as her biological son.

Camera shutters clicked through the courtroom.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Helena admitted concealing his identity.

She admitted using money and threats against Leah.

She admitted knowing Thomas’s medication had been altered.

“Did you order Thomas’s death?” the prosecutor asked.

“No.”

“Did you help create the conditions that allowed it?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I believed protecting the family required controlling everyone inside it.”

She looked toward Evan.

“I was wrong.”

Daniel testified next.

He described Sabrina’s plan to marry Evan, present Daniel’s child as a Mercer heir and later remove Evan through medical incapacity or death.

He admitted moving money.

He admitted canceling Thomas’s brake inspection.

He admitted sending Thomas the message that changed his route on the night of the crash.

“You knew Martin had damaged the brakes,” the prosecutor said.

Daniel hesitated.

“I suspected.”

“That is not an answer.”

“Yes.”

The courtroom erupted.

Evan felt no surprise.

Only exhaustion.

Daniel continued.

“I told myself Thomas would stop the car.

I told myself Sabrina wanted to frighten him.”

“Why?”

“Because the truth made me less important to her plans.”

The prosecutor displayed the hockey-stick photograph.

“Did you order Sabrina to stop Ellie?”

“No.”

“Did you send the message?”

“No.”

Network experts traced the message to the COUNSEL account.

Naomi remained under investigation.

Then Howard produced a second log.

The access had occurred while Naomi was in court representing another client.

Her device was not connected.

Someone used the backup password from inside Thomas’s library.

A fingerprint had been recovered from the hidden keyboard years earlier.

The estate’s original forensic report identified it as Thomas’s.

Modern testing found a partial second print.

Grace Holloway.

Police questioned her.

Grace denied sending the message.

She admitted knowing Thomas’s password.

“Why access the network after his death?” Ruiz asked.

“To watch Ellie.”

Evan stared.

“You watched my daughter?”

“I promised Thomas I would protect her.”

“By leaving her inside the estate?”

“I believed visibility protected her.”

“That was the same reasoning everyone used.”

Grace began crying.

“I did not know Sabrina would use the hockey stick.”

“Did you send the message?”

“No.”

The network log showed the COUNSEL account had been accessed from Grace’s Vermont cabin on several occasions.

Her internet equipment had been compromised.

Someone used her connection remotely.

The trail led to a private server in Canada.

Howard recognized the owner.

Thomas Mercer.

The server had continued operating automatically after his death.

It contained scheduled messages and contingency commands.

One command sent the warning to Sabrina on the day of the assault.

Thomas had created it years earlier.

But Thomas could not have known Ellie would find the drive at that exact moment.

Someone modified the schedule.

The modification required biometric access.

Thomas’s preserved fingerprint had been used.

Marcus Vale had access to Thomas’s medical records and body after death.

Marcus cloned the fingerprint.

Under renewed interrogation, he confessed.

Vivian ordered him to trigger the message.

She wanted Sabrina frightened enough to expose herself.

She expected Sabrina to grab the drive.

She did not expect her to swing the hockey stick.

“You used Ellie as bait,” Evan said during Vivian’s next hearing.

Vivian did not deny it.

“I needed the conspiracy visible.”

“You nearly got my daughter killed.”

“I believed Leah would protect her.”

“You counted on a mother sacrificing herself.”

“Because mothers do.”

The answer revealed everything broken inside Vivian.

Her own history had become permission to endanger others.

The jury received the final evidence.

Sabrina was convicted of Thomas’s murder, conspiracy, assault, fraud and attempted theft of the Mercer trust.

Daniel pleaded guilty to murder conspiracy, kidnapping and financial crimes.

Marcus faced attempted murder and medical fraud charges.

Vivian was charged with kidnapping, conspiracy and reckless endangerment.

Helena pleaded guilty to obstruction and witness intimidation.

The network finally collapsed.

Then Sabrina stood during sentencing.

She turned toward Evan.

“You still think Leah chose you?”

The judge ordered her to sit.

Sabrina ignored him.

“Ask her what Thomas offered in exchange for silence.”

Leah’s face changed.

Evan noticed.

After everything, there was still something she had not told him.

Outside the courtroom, he asked directly.

“What did my father offer?”

Leah closed her eyes.

“Protection.”

“What kind?”

“A new identity.

A house overseas.

Enough money to raise Ellie without anyone finding us.”

“Did you accept?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because leaving would mean you never had a chance to know her.”

Evan’s anger softened.

Then Leah added, “But I signed the relocation documents.”

“Why?”

“So Thomas could activate them if he believed Ellie was in immediate danger.”

“Did he?”

“I don’t know.”

Camille approached carrying newly discovered travel records.

Thomas had activated the documents the night before his death.

Two passports were issued under false names.

One for Leah.

One for Ellie.

They had been used three months later to enter Canada.

Leah stared at the records.

“I never left the country.”

“Then someone used the identities,” Camille said.

“Who?”

The border photograph showed a woman carrying a baby.

The woman was Grace Holloway.

The child’s face was partly hidden.

Evan looked toward Ellie.

“If that was not Ellie, whose baby did Grace take across the border?”

Grace answered during questioning.

The infant was Sabrina’s first child.

A daughter born four years earlier and hidden from everyone.

The birth occurred three weeks before Ellie.

The father was Daniel.

Grace whispered the final truth.

“Sabrina’s daughter is alive.”

“Where?”

Grace looked toward Vivian.

“With the woman who raised Daniel.”
