Chapter 12 - Mason's Voice

The angry roar faded into a pitiful, agonizing scream. It was Mason’s voice, and it sounded incredibly close. Arthur rushed forward, his boots splashing through puddles of black, sticky sludge. He turned a corner and found his grandson trapped inside a cage made of shadowy thorns. Mason looked exhausted, his clothes torn and his face covered in dark grime. He looked up at Arthur, tears streaming down his dirt-streaked face. He warned Arthur to run away, saying that the monster was using him as bait. Arthur refused to leave, pulling the heavy silver pendant from his pocket. He pressed the silver against the shadowy thorns, causing them to hiss and smoke. He worked frantically, breaking apart the cage piece by piece. Mason stumbled out, falling exhausted into his grandfather's waiting arms. They had to move quickly before the creature returned to claim its prize.
