Chapter 1 - The Illusion of InnocenceThe silence in the hospital suite was deafening, broken only by the ragged, shallow breaths escaping Khloe’s pale lips. She lay curled on the cold marble floor, her arms locked defensively around her swollen abdomen, her white maternity gown stained with an unmistakable, terrifying shade of red.

In the doorway, Marcus Thorne stood paralyzed. His tailored black tuxedo, immaculate just moments ago at the charity gala downstairs, felt suffocating. His sharp, dark eyes darted from the shattered crystal champagne flute on the floor to the woman he had sworn to protect, and finally to the woman standing over her.

Isabella Rossi.

The heiress was a vision in blood-red silk, but the tears streaming down her perfectly contoured face seemed entirely out of place. Her hands were trembling. She pulled them to her chest, her voice cracking with a masterclass display of vulnerability.

"Marcus..." Isabella choked out a sob, stumbling backward as if terrified. "She—she came at me. I just came to check on her, to bring her some water, and she just snapped. She threw herself at me and tripped... I tried to catch her!"

Elaine Parker, the event coordinator standing just behind Marcus, gasped, her hands flying to her mouth in horror.

For a fraction of a second, the sheer audacity of Isabella’s lie hung in the air. The Rossi family and the Thorne family had been intertwined in business for decades. Isabella had always been the polished, perfect socialite, a woman of grace.

But Marcus wasn't a fool.

He didn't look at Isabella. His gaze dropped back to Khloe, and the glacial facade that made him New York’s most ruthless billionaire completely shattered.

"Khloe!" Marcus roared, closing the distance in two massive strides. He dropped to his knees, heedless of the glass shards biting through his expensive trousers. His large, trembling hands hovered over her, terrified that touching her might cause more damage. "Khloe, look at me. Look at me, sweetheart."

Khloe’s eyelashes fluttered, heavy with pain. Her face was ashen, a stark contrast to her dark hair spilled across the floor. When her eyes met his, there was no plea for help. There was only a hollow, devastating resignation.

"My baby..." Khloe whispered, her voice barely a rasp. "Marcus... the baby."

"You're going to be fine. Both of you," Marcus said, his voice thick with a panic he had never known. He turned his head, his eyes burning with a lethal fury as he barked at the paralyzed event coordinator. "Elaine! Get a doctor! Now!"

Elaine scrambled backward and sprinted down the hallway, screaming for help.

Isabella took a tentative step forward, her crocodile tears falling faster. "Marcus, I’m so sorry. She’s just been so unstable lately, you know the pregnancy hormones—"

"Shut your mouth," Marcus growled, his voice so low, so saturated with venom, that Isabella froze in her tracks.

Before Isabella could attempt another manipulation, heavy footsteps echoed down the corridor. A man in a tailored charcoal suit burst into the suite, moving with the authority of someone who owned the building.

Because, technically, he did.

Richard Sterling wasn't just the Chief of Surgery and a major board member of this exclusive private hospital. He was Khloe’s uncle. And the iPad clutched in his hand was about to detonate Isabella Rossi’s entire world.

"Get away from my niece," Richard snarled, his eyes locking onto Isabella with absolute disgust.

"Dr. Sterling!" Isabella cried, stepping back. "Khloe had an accident—"

"Save it for the police, you psychotic bitch," Richard snapped.

Isabella’s perfectly painted lips parted in shock. The polite, refined society rules had just been thrown out the window.

Richard dropped to his knees beside Marcus, instantly checking Khloe’s pulse and the source of the bleeding. "Hang on, Khloe. Trauma team is ten seconds away. You’re safe now." He glanced at Marcus, his jaw tight. "Don't move her. Her spine took an impact."

Marcus’s blood ran cold. Impact.

"Richard," Marcus said, his voice shaking. "What happened? Isabella said she tripped—"

Richard didn’t even look at the billionaire. Instead, he shoved the iPad directly into Marcus’s chest. "I was in the security control room monitoring the gala’s VIP feed when I saw this. Press play, Thorne. See who you've been letting into your wife's life."

Marcus took the tablet. His thumb hit the screen.

The black-and-white security footage was crystal clear. It showed Khloe standing by the table, exhausted. It showed Isabella entering. It showed the argument, the shoving, the brutal slam against the marble edge.

And then, it showed the kick.

Marcus stopped breathing. The world around him dissolved into white noise. He watched the stiletto heel slam into his pregnant wife's side. He watched Khloe crumple to the floor, curling around their unborn child to protect it from a monster.

Slowly, Marcus lowered the iPad. When he turned his head to look at Isabella, the look in his eyes wasn't just anger.

It was a promise of total annihilation.
