Chapter 14 - The Queen’s GambitThree months later, the corporate landscape of New York was in for a rude awakening.

The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was packed with investors, Wall Street analysts, and media personnel. The Sterling-Hayes Hotel Group was holding its annual shareholder meeting, a usually quiet affair. But today, rumors were swirling.

At the back of the room, sitting in a dark, tailored Tom Ford suit, was Marcus Thorne. People gave him a wide berth. The billionaire hadn't been seen at social events in months. He had become a ghost, dividing his time entirely between his ruthless takeovers and sitting quietly in Khloe's living room, holding his son.

The lights dimmed. The chatter died down.

A spotlight hit the stage, and Khloe walked out.

The room gasped. She wasn't dressed like a trophy wife. She wore a sharp, crimson pantsuit that screamed authority. Her dark hair was slicked back, and her eyes held a lethal, predatory confidence.

"Good morning," Khloe said into the microphone, her voice ringing clear and commanding across the silent room. "For the past five years, my parents have been the face of Sterling-Hayes. But behind the scenes, I have been the one writing the expansion strategies, balancing the portfolios, and negotiating the acquisitions."

Murmurs broke out across the room. Several older, grey-haired investors scoffed visibly.

"Let's be clear," Khloe continued, pulling up a massive slide on the projector behind her. "Sterling-Hayes is no longer just a boutique chain on the West Coast. As of this morning, under my direction as the newly appointed CEO, we have acquired three major luxury resorts in Europe, effectively doubling our market cap."

The room erupted into shocked whispers. The numbers on the screen were staggering.

One of the arrogant board members stood up. "Mrs. Thorne, with all due respect, these are massive corporate moves. Does your husband's company plan on backing these high-risk ventures?"

Khloe smiled. It was a chilling, beautiful smile.

"My husband has nothing to do with this," Khloe replied flawlessly. "Thorne Industries operates in tech and real estate. I operate in hospitality. I don't need my husband's money to crush my competitors. I just need my brain."

At the back of the room, Marcus leaned back in his chair. A slow, deeply arrogant smirk spread across his face. He didn't feel emasculated. He felt overwhelmingly, intoxicatingly proud.

That's my wife, he thought, watching her systematically dismantle every skeptical question thrown at her. She was a goddess of war, and he was absolutely obsessed with her.

When the presentation ended, the room gave her a standing ovation. Khloe stepped off the stage, her adrenaline pumping. She walked through the crowd, accepting handshakes, until she reached the back of the room.

Marcus stood up, handing her a glass of sparkling water.

"You were terrifying," Marcus murmured, his eyes dark with admiration. "Remind me never to negotiate a contract against you."

Khloe took a sip of the water, a genuine spark in her eyes. "You wouldn't stand a chance, Thorne."

For the first time in almost a year, they shared a real, unburdened smile.
