Chapter 11 - The Glass WallThe Neonatal Intensive Care Unit was a symphony of soft, terrifying noises. The hum of the incubators, the rhythmic beeping of the heart monitors, the quiet, urgent whispers of the nurses.

Inside one of the most advanced, climate-controlled incubators in the world lay Leo Alexander Thorne. He weighed barely four pounds. He had a tiny cap on his head and a feeding tube taped to his fragile cheek.

Khloe sat in a padded rocking chair beside the glass box, her hand resting against the warm plastic. She had been sitting there for twelve hours straight.

"He's a fighter, Khloe," a deep, rough voice said from the doorway.

Marcus walked in. He looked nothing like the polished, ruthless billionaire who graced the covers of Forbes. He was in a simple black t-shirt and jeans. He hadn't shaved in days. Dark circles shadowed his eyes, a testament to the fact that he hadn't left the hospital since Leo’s birth a week ago.

He didn't approach her directly. He knew the rules. He stayed on the opposite side of the incubator, staring down at his son with a mixture of overwhelming love and devastating guilt.

"Dr. Evans said his lungs are developing perfectly," Marcus offered softly. "He breathed on his own for ten minutes today."

"I know. I was here," Khloe replied, her voice flat, though her eyes softened as she looked at the tiny baby.

Silence stretched between them, heavy and suffocating.

Marcus placed his large hand against the glass, exactly opposite to where Khloe’s hand rested. For a fleeting second, it looked like they were touching.

"I bought the Rossi estate," Marcus said quietly, not looking up. "The mansion in the Hamptons. The penthouse on 5th Avenue. I bought them all in the bankruptcy auction this morning."

Khloe finally looked at him. "Why?"

"So I could bulldoze them," Marcus stated, his voice completely void of emotion. "I had the demolition crews start an hour ago. I'm turning the land over to the city to build free maternal healthcare clinics. In your name."

Khloe’s breath hitched. It was a billion-dollar gesture. A monumental display of power and contrition. But she just shook her head, a sad, exhausted smile touching her lips.

"You can't buy your way out of what happened, Marcus. Destroying Isabella’s family doesn’t erase the fact that you let her into ours."

Marcus swallowed hard, the truth of her words cutting deeper than any blade. "I know. I’m not trying to buy your forgiveness, Khloe. I’m just trying to make the world safer for you and Leo. Even if I’m not in it."

He took a step back, giving her space, giving her the power. "I'll be out in the hallway if you need anything."

As he walked out, Khloe watched his broad shoulders slump. The invincible Marcus Thorne had been broken, and for the first time, Khloe wondered if there was anything left in the rubble worth saving.
