Chapter 16 - The New EraTwo years had passed since the night that almost destroyed everything.

The New York skyline glittered under the night sky, but inside the Thorne-Sterling penthouse, the atmosphere was chaotic in the best possible way.
"Leo, stop running! Put the shoe down!" Marcus Thorne, the terrifying billionaire who routinely made Wall Street executives cry, was currently chasing a giggling two-year-old across the Persian rug.
Leo Alexander Thorne shrieked with joy, clutching his father’s expensive Italian leather loafer as he bolted behind the velvet sofa.
Khloe stood in the doorway of the living room, leaning against the frame with a cup of chamomile tea. She wore a silk robe, her dark hair cascading over her shoulders, looking effortlessly stunning. A soft smile played on her lips as she watched her two favorite boys.
"Trapped!" Marcus roared playfully, lunging over the armrest and scooping Leo into the air. The toddler erupted into a fit of laughter as Marcus showered his cheeks with kisses.
Khloe’s heart swelled. Over the past two years, Marcus had kept his promise. Every single day, he proved that his family was his true empire. He never missed a doctor’s appointment, he was home for dinner every night, and he looked at Khloe with a reverence that took her breath away.
But their peace was about to be tested.
Marcus set Leo down with his nanny and walked over to Khloe, wrapping his arms around her waist from behind and resting his chin on her shoulder. "You smell amazing. Are you ready for the gala tonight?"
"I am," Khloe said, leaning back into his solid chest. "But Julian Croft is going to be there."
Marcus’s jaw tightened instinctively.
Julian Croft was the CEO of Vanguard Hospitality, the Sterling-Hayes Group’s biggest rival. For the past six months, Julian had been trying to aggressively block Khloe’s expansion into the Asian market. He was old-money, arrogant, and fundamentally believed that Khloe was just a pretty face playing with her husband's checkbook.
"If Croft disrespects you tonight, I will personally buy Vanguard and liquidate his entire board by morning," Marcus growled, his protective instincts flaring.
Khloe turned around in his arms, placing a manicured finger over his lips. "Down, boy. You promised to let me handle my own battles."
Marcus’s eyes softened, a dangerous, proud smirk pulling at his lips. "I know. I just love watching you destroy people."

"Then dress nicely, Mr. Thorne," Khloe purred, stepping out of his embrace. "Because tonight, I'm going to make Julian Croft bleed."
