Chapter 12 - The Headlines and the HeirThe morning after the Luz y Esperanza Gala, the world woke up to a new reality.

Mexico City’s elite didn't just read the news; they were consumed by it. Every major newspaper, every high-society blog, every financial network plastered the same image across their front pages.

It was a photograph of Marisol.

Standing in the center of the National Palace ballroom, draped in midnight-blue velvet and dripping in diamonds, looking like a literal goddess. In the background, Paulina Robles was being dragged out by security, her face twisted in a humiliating wail.

The headline of El Economista read: "THE BILLIONAIRE'S NEW QUEEN: How Diego Villaseñor Traded a Bankrupt Heiress for a True Empress."

Tabloids were more brutal: "FROM FLOORS TO FORTUNES: The Maid Who Masterminded the Fall of the Robles Empire."

Inside the sun-drenched breakfast room of the Villaseñor mansion, Diego threw the newspapers onto the glass table with a heavy thud. He wasn't angry; he was fiercely satisfied. The narrative was exactly what he had paid his PR team triple their usual rate to ensure: Marisol was untouched, untouchable, and fiercely protected.

Marisol walked into the room, dressed in a soft cashmere sweater and fitted jeans. She looked at the towering stack of newspapers and let out a long breath.

"They are calling me a mastermind," she murmured, picking up a magazine. "I barely know how to use your espresso machine, Diego."

Diego chuckled, a deep, rumbling sound that made her chest warm. He walked over, wrapping his arms around her waist from behind and resting his chin on her shoulder.

"They are terrified of you," Diego whispered, pressing a kiss to the curve of her neck. "And they should be. You conquered the entire ballroom without throwing a single punch. You are a natural, mi amor."

"Mama! Papa!"

A tiny, energetic voice interrupted them. Valentina came running into the breakfast room, wearing her new school uniform—a plaid skirt, a tiny blazer, and a backpack that was almost as big as she was.

Today was her first day at the most exclusive private academy in the country.

Diego knelt down, his billionaire persona melting away instantly as he fixed her crooked little tie. "Look at you. The smartest, prettiest girl in the whole city."

"Do I have to go?" Valentina pouted, clutching Mr. Barnaby, the stuffed rabbit, under one arm. "I want to stay here with you and Mama."

"You are going to make so many new friends," Marisol smiled, kneeling beside Diego and brushing Valentina's dark hair. "And Papa’s guards will be right outside your classroom all day. You are perfectly safe."

Diego’s eyes darkened slightly at the mention of the guards. He had tripled the security detail. Four armed former special forces operatives were assigned exclusively to Valentina. Two for Marisol.

He hadn't told Marisol yet, but his security chief had intercepted a series of frantic phone calls late last night.
