Chapter 14 - The Playground AmbushIt was 11:30 AM.

Marisol couldn't shake the heavy, anxious feeling in her chest. It was Valentina’s first day away from her in three years. For three years, they had been entirely co-dependent, hiding in a tiny laundry room, surviving purely on each other’s presence.
The silence of the massive mansion was deafening.
"Esteban," Marisol called out, walking into the grand hallway. "Have the driver bring the car around. I can't wait until 3:00 PM. I am going to pick Valentina up early."
"Right away, Señora," Esteban bowed, immediately grabbing his earpiece to coordinate with the security team.
Twenty minutes later, Marisol’s armored SUV pulled up to the wrought-iron gates of St. Jude Academy.
She stepped out, flanked by two massive bodyguards. Through the iron fence, she could see the kindergarten recess yard. Children in tiny uniforms were running around the luxury playground.
Marisol scanned the crowd and finally spotted Valentina. She was sitting on a bench, happily showing Mr. Barnaby to another little girl.
Marisol’s heart swelled. She smiled, walking toward the gate to sign her out.
But then, the world exploded into chaos.
A black, unmarked van violently hopped the curb, smashing through the side gate of the playground with a deafening crash of twisting metal.
Teachers screamed. Children scattered in pure terror.
Three men in tactical gear and ski masks poured out of the back of the van. They didn't look around. They didn't hesitate. They sprinted directly toward the bench where Valentina was sitting.
"VALENTINA!" Marisol screamed, a raw, primal sound tearing from her throat.
The Villaseñor bodyguards drew their weapons instantly, but they were too far away. The masked men were already at the bench.
One of the men grabbed Valentina by the arm, hoisting her into the air. The little girl shrieked, kicking her tiny legs, terrified. Mr. Barnaby fell to the dirt.
Marisol didn't think. She didn't wait for the guards.
The mother who had scrubbed floors until her hands bled, the woman who had endured starvation to feed her baby, turned into a literal force of nature.
She sprinted across the lawn faster than anyone thought possible. As the massive man turned to run back to the van with her screaming daughter, Marisol launched herself through the air.
She slammed into the man's back with all her momentum, her manicured fingers digging violently into the eye-holes of his ski mask.
The man roared in pain, dropping Valentina to blindly claw at his face.
"Run, Valentina! RUN TO THE GUARDS!" Marisol shrieked.
Valentina hit the grass and immediately scrambled away, sobbing, straight into the arms of the advancing Villaseñor security team.
The man managed to throw Marisol off his back. She hit the ground hard, rolling onto the turf. Another masked man pulled a heavy steel baton and raised it, aiming directly for Marisol’s head to silence her.
Marisol braced for the impact, throwing her arms up.
But the blow never landed.
A deafening CRACK echoed across the playground.
The man with the baton dropped like a stone, a tranquilizer dart buried deep in his shoulder.
Diego’s personal security chief, a terrifying ex-military sniper named Silva, stood fifty yards away, lowering a specialized rifle.
"Target down! Secure the perimeter!" Silva roared into his radio.
The remaining two men looked at the advancing army of bodyguards, realizing they were completely surrounded. They dropped their weapons and put their hands on their heads.
Marisol was gasping for air on the grass when strong hands grabbed her, pulling her up.
"Mama! Mama!"
Valentina threw herself into Marisol’s arms, sobbing uncontrollably. Marisol squeezed her daughter so tightly she thought her ribs might crack, burying her face in the child's dark hair, crying tears of absolute terror and relief.
A black Maybach drifted around the corner at terrifying speed, slamming on the brakes.
The door flew open before the car even stopped.
Diego sprinted across the playground. His face was pale. His eyes were wide with a panic the billionaire had never known in his entire life.
He crashed to his knees on the grass, wrapping his massive arms around both Marisol and Valentina, pulling them into his chest, burying his face in Marisol’s neck. He was physically shaking.
"I've got you," Diego choked out, his voice breaking completely. "I've got you. You're safe. You're both safe."
He held them for a long, agonizing minute.
Then, Diego looked up.

He looked at the mercenaries pinned to the ground by his guards. The panic in his eyes vanished entirely.
What replaced it was a cold, demonic rage that promised absolute destruction.
