Chapter 15 - The ExileDiego walked slowly toward the man pinned face-down in the dirt by Chief Silva.

"Who hired you?" Diego asked. His voice wasn't a yell. It was a quiet, hollow whisper that sounded like the grim reaper himself.
The mercenary spat blood into the grass, staying silent.
Diego didn't blink. He looked at Silva. "Break his arm."
Silva didn't hesitate. He grabbed the man's right arm, twisted it back, and applied brutal, sickening pressure until a sharp SNAP echoed across the silent playground.
The man screamed in absolute agony, thrashing against the dirt.
"I will ask you one last time before I have my men break your spine and leave you paralyze in a ditch," Diego whispered, leaning down. "Who?"
"An old woman!" the man sobbed, tears streaming from his eyes. "White suit! Pearls! She paid us fifty grand to take the kid to the Toluca airstrip!"
Diego closed his eyes. A muscle in his jaw feathered.
It was his mother. She had actually tried to steal his child.
Diego stood up, fixing the cuffs of his suit. "Hand them over to the federal police. Make sure the warden knows they are not to survive the year."
Diego turned back to Marisol and Valentina, his face softening instantly. He scooped his daughter up into his arms and held his hand out to Marisol.
"Take them to the safe house," Diego ordered his driver. "Lock it down. No one enters."
"Where are you going?" Marisol asked, gripping his arm, terrified to let him out of her sight.
"I have to end this," Diego said, kissing her forehead. "Once and for all."
Two hours later, Diego’s private helicopter touched down on the tarmac of the Toluca private airstrip.
Elena Villaseñor was standing near a small, rented Cessna plane, anxiously checking her watch. When she heard the massive twin-engine chopper land, she smiled, assuming her mercenaries had arrived with the child.
The door of the chopper opened.
But it wasn't a mercenary who stepped out.
It was Diego.
Elena’s blood ran cold. The smile completely fell from her face. She took a step backward as her son walked purposefully across the tarmac toward her, flanked by four heavily armed guards.
"Diego..." Elena stammered, raising her hands defensively. "What are you doing here?"
"You hired men to kidnap my daughter," Diego stated, stopping ten feet away from her. The wind from the rotors whipped his dark hair around his cold, emotionless face.
"No! No, I didn't!" Elena lied frantically. "I was just... I am leaving the country! I was waiting for my pilot!"
"Your pilot is currently in federal custody," Diego said flatly. "Along with your hitmen. They confessed to everything, Mother."
Elena’s knees gave out. She collapsed onto the hard tarmac, sobbing hysterically. "Diego, please! I am your mother! I was only trying to protect the family name! That woman ruined you!"
Diego looked down at the woman who had given birth to him, feeling absolutely nothing. The love, the respect, the obligation—it had all burned away the second his daughter was put in danger.
"You don't have a family name anymore," Diego said, his voice void of any human warmth. "You are dead to me."
He pulled a thick black passport from his suit pocket and threw it onto the tarmac at her feet.
"That is a new passport. A new identity. There is a bank account tied to it with exactly enough money to buy a small house in a rural town in Argentina," Diego ordered. "You will get on that Cessna. You will fly to Buenos Aires. You will never contact anyone in Mexico again. You will never speak my name. If you ever try to return, if you ever try to contact my wife or my child again, I will not call the police. I will have you buried in a place where no one will ever find you."
Elena stared at him in sheer terror. She realized he wasn't threatening her. He was making a promise.
"Get on the plane, Elena," Diego commanded.
Sobbing, stripped of her wealth, her power, and her son, the former matriarch of the Villaseñor empire crawled off the ground and slowly boarded the cheap aircraft.
Diego watched the plane taxi down the runway and take off into the cloudy sky.

He took a deep breath. The air finally felt clean. The demons of his past were completely eradicated.
It was time to build his future.
