Chapter 10 - VICTORIA'S CONFESSION
Victoria stepped into the dark study.
Daniel stared at her.
“How did you get here?”
“I followed you.”
“Why?”
Her eyes moved toward the notebook.
“You found it.”
Daniel held it tightly.
“What happened to my mother?”
Victoria looked away.
“I didn't kill her.”
“That's not what I asked.”
Victoria's voice trembled.
“She knew about Marcus.”
Daniel froze.
“What did Marcus do?”
“He was stealing from your father.”
“And my mother found out?”
Victoria nodded.
“She threatened to expose him.”
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“What happened?”
Victoria looked at Amelia.
“Her mother was involved too.”
Amelia stepped forward.
“What are you talking about?”
Victoria whispered:
“Your mother discovered the same thing.”
Amelia's face went pale.
“What?”
“Your mother and Daniel's mother were working together.”
Daniel stared.
“They knew each other?”
“Yes.”
Victoria took a breath.
“They were trying to expose Marcus.”
Daniel looked at the notebook.
“And you?”
Victoria closed her eyes.
“I was young.”
“You helped him?”
“I was afraid.”
Daniel's voice became harder.
“You helped him.”
Victoria nodded.
“I gave him information.”
Amelia stared at her.
“Did you cause my mother's accident?”
“No.”
“Did Marcus?”
Victoria hesitated.
“I don't know.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Tell me everything.”
Victoria looked toward the door.
“Marcus isn't the real person behind this.”
Daniel's expression changed.
“Who is?”
Victoria's eyes filled with fear.
“Someone you trust.”
Before she could say the name, the lights suddenly came on.
A gunshot echoed outside.
Victoria screamed.
The window shattered.
Daniel pulled Amelia to the floor.
Security rushed into the room.
Victoria crouched behind the desk.
Daniel looked at her.
“Who?”
She shook her head.
“I can't.”
Another gunshot struck the wall.
Daniel grabbed Amelia.
“We're leaving.”
As they ran from the study, Victoria remained behind.
But before Daniel reached the hallway, he heard Victoria shout:
“Your father's lawyer!”
Daniel stopped.
His father's lawyer.
The man who had managed the estate for twenty years.
The man Daniel had trusted completely.
