Chapter 4 - A SECRET TOO BIG
At the hospital, doctors rushed Amelia into an examination room.
Daniel stood outside.
He had never felt so helpless.
Every few minutes, a nurse passed him without explanation.
Finally, Dr. Bennett approached.
“Mr. Carter?”
Daniel immediately stood.
“How is she?”
“She’s stable.”
“And the baby?”
“The baby is responding well.”
Daniel exhaled.
“But?”
The doctor hesitated.
“We found signs of repeated abdominal trauma.”
Daniel stared at him.
“What does that mean?”
“Your wife may have been injured before tonight.”
Daniel's fists tightened.
“She never told me.”
“She may not have wanted you to know.”
Daniel lowered his head.
Then his phone rang.
It was the security manager.
“Mr. Carter, we found something.”
Daniel answered immediately.
“What?”
“There are missing camera files.”
Daniel frowned.
“Missing?”
“Someone accessed the system remotely.”
“When?”
“Three days ago.”
Daniel's stomach tightened.
“Can you identify the device?”
“We're working on it.”
“Do it.”
Daniel ended the call.
Then another thought struck him.
Victoria had known about the camera.
Maybe she had been trying to erase something.
His phone rang again.
This time it was an unknown number.
Daniel answered.
A distorted male voice spoke.
“You're looking in the wrong place.”
“Who is this?”
“You should ask your wife who the baby's father really is.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
The caller hung up.
Daniel stood motionless.
His first instinct was anger.
His second was denial.
His third was fear.
When Amelia finally woke, Daniel entered her room.
She looked exhausted.
“Daniel?”
He sat beside her.
“I need to ask you something.”
Her expression changed.
“What?”
“Is there something about this baby you haven't told me?”
Amelia stared at him.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then tears appeared in her eyes.
“I wanted to tell you.”
Daniel felt his heart sink.
“Tell me what?”
Amelia whispered.
“The baby is yours.”

“But someone is trying to make you believe otherwise.”
