Chapter 11 - THE LAWYER
Daniel immediately contacted his father's former attorney, Richard Mason.
Richard answered calmly.
“Daniel, what can I do for you?”
“Where are you?”
“At home.”
“Stay there.”
Richard paused.
“Why?”
“I'll explain later.”
Daniel ended the call.
Then he contacted the police.
Within hours, investigators searched Richard's office.
They found encrypted financial records.
Hidden accounts.
Fake companies.
And correspondence with Marcus Vale.
Daniel stared at the evidence.
Richard had been moving money for years.
But the biggest discovery was a recording.
Richard's voice could be heard discussing Daniel's father.
“He's getting suspicious.”
Another voice answered.
Marcus.
“What about Elena?”
Richard replied:
“She won't stay quiet.”
Daniel listened with growing anger.
Then another voice spoke.
A woman's voice.
Victoria.
“I can handle Amelia.”
Daniel stopped the recording.
Amelia looked at him.
“So she knew.”
“Yes.”
“She was trying to destroy me.”
Daniel nodded.
“But why?”
Before he could answer, the police entered.
“Mr. Carter, we found Richard.”
“Where?”
“He was trying to leave the country.”
Daniel's expression hardened.
“Take me to him.”
At the station, Richard sat behind a glass partition.
He looked surprisingly calm.
Daniel entered.
“You betrayed my father.”
Richard smiled.
“Your father betrayed himself.”
“What does that mean?”
“He trusted the wrong people.”
Daniel leaned forward.
“Who ordered everything?”
Richard said nothing.
“Who?”
Richard smiled.
“You think Victoria is the villain.”
“She isn't?”
“She was useful.”
Daniel froze.
Richard continued.
“She was desperate for you.”
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
“And Marcus?”
“Useful.”
“And you?”
Richard smiled.
“I was protecting the person who actually owns everything.”
Daniel's blood ran cold.
“Who?”
Richard leaned toward the glass.
“Ask your wife.”
Daniel stared at him.
“What?”

“Ask Amelia what she was doing the night your father died.”
