Chapter 8 - THE NIGHT SHE FORGOT
Amelia closed her eyes.
“I was nineteen.”
Daniel sat beside her.
“What happened that night?”
“My mother had been fighting with someone.”
“Who?”
“I don't remember.”
“You were there?”
“Yes.”
She stared at the photograph.
“Victoria was there too.”
Daniel frowned.
“Why?”
“I don't know.”
Amelia's breathing became shallow.
“She told me my mother had gone out.”
“And?”
“She never came back.”
Daniel felt a chill.
“What did the police say?”
“Car accident.”
“Was Victoria involved?”
“I don't know.”
Daniel studied the photograph.
Marcus was in the background.
Victoria was beside Amelia.
And Amelia's mother had died that same night.
Daniel immediately called a private investigator.
“I need the original accident report.”
Within hours, the report arrived.
Daniel read it carefully.
There was something strange.
The vehicle had been traveling at a normal speed.
There were no brake marks.
The driver's blood alcohol level was zero.
And one detail had been overlooked.
A second vehicle had been reported near the scene.
A black SUV.
Registered to Marcus Vale.
Daniel's stomach tightened.
“This goes back years.”
Amelia looked frightened.
“Daniel, what if my mother's death wasn't an accident?”
He held her hand.
“Then we'll find the truth.”
She looked at him.
“Promise?”
“I promise.”
That afternoon, the investigator called.
“We found the second vehicle.”
Daniel answered.
“Where?”
“It was sold six months after the accident.”
“To whom?”
The investigator paused.
“Victoria Hale.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
The connection was undeniable.
But there was still no proof that Victoria had caused the accident.
Daniel needed something stronger.
Then the investigator said:
“There is one more thing.”
“What?”
“The vehicle wasn't purchased with Victoria's money.”
“Whose?”
The investigator sent him the financial record.
Daniel opened it.
The money came from an account belonging to Daniel's father.
Daniel stared at the document.
His father had died two years earlier.
But the account had remained active.
