Chapter 12 - THE TRUTH ABOUT AMELIA
Daniel returned to the hospital in silence.
Amelia immediately saw his expression.
“What happened?”
“Richard said something.”
“What?”
“He said I should ask you what happened the night my father died.”
Amelia's face changed.
Daniel noticed.
“You know something.”
“I didn't want to tell you.”
“Tell me now.”
She closed her eyes.
“Your father contacted me.”
Daniel froze.
“When?”
“Two years ago.”
“Before he died?”
“Yes.”
“What did he want?”
“He said someone was stealing from you.”
Daniel stared.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“He told me not to.”
“Why?”
“He said if you knew, you'd be in danger.”
Daniel stepped back.
“What did you do?”
“I agreed to help him.”
Daniel's anger faded into confusion.
“How?”
“I copied documents.”
“What documents?”
“Financial records.”
Daniel sat down.
“Where are they?”
Amelia reached beneath the mattress.
She pulled out a small envelope.
Inside were copies of transactions.
Richard's signature.
Marcus's company.
Victoria's accounts.
And one final name.
Daniel stared.
His own name.
“What is this?”
Amelia whispered:
“Your father believed someone was trying to frame you.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because the money was being moved through accounts connected to you.”
He read the final document.
It showed a planned transfer.
Ten million dollars.
Scheduled for the day after his father's death.
The recipient?
Daniel Carter.
If completed, it would make him appear responsible for everything.
Daniel suddenly understood.
His father's death hadn't ended the conspiracy.
It had begun the final stage.
The attackers wanted Daniel blamed.
And Amelia had been protecting the evidence.
Then Daniel's phone rang.
The police.
“Mr. Carter, we need you to return to the station.”
“Why?”
“We arrested Victoria Hale.”
Daniel frowned.
“For what?”
“Murder.”
His blood went cold.
“Whose murder?”
The officer hesitated.
“Marcus Vale.”
Daniel looked at Amelia.
Victoria had just become the prime suspect.
But Daniel knew something was wrong.
