Chapter 16 - THE LAST THREAT
Three weeks passed.
Amelia's pregnancy became more difficult.
Daniel hired security.
He changed every lock.
Every password.
Every account.
He trusted almost no one.
Then, one morning, Amelia received a letter.
No return address.
Inside was a single photograph.
Her unborn child.
An ultrasound image.
On the back were four words.
You cannot hide forever.
Daniel read it.
His face became cold.
“Call the police.”
Amelia nodded.
But before they could do anything, the lights went out.
The house fell silent.
Daniel immediately moved toward Amelia.
“Stay behind me.”
A noise came from downstairs.
Glass breaking.
Then footsteps.
Security guards rushed through the hallway.
Daniel held Amelia's hand.
The intruder entered the foyer.
It was Victoria.
She raised both hands.
“Don't shoot.”
Daniel stared.
“What are you doing here?”
“I came to warn you.”
“About what?”
“Eleanor has someone outside.”
Daniel looked toward the windows.
Victoria continued.
“She knows about the baby.”
Amelia stepped forward.
“How?”
Victoria looked at her.
“She has been watching you.”
Daniel immediately called the police.
Victoria shook her head.
“It's too late.”
“What?”
“She escaped.”
Daniel froze.
Eleanor had escaped custody.
Police sirens suddenly sounded outside.
The front door opened.
Officers rushed inside.
One officer approached Daniel.
“We found Eleanor's vehicle abandoned three miles away.”
Daniel's stomach tightened.
“Where is she?”
“We don't know.”
Victoria looked terrified.
“She'll come here.”
Daniel moved Amelia upstairs.
Security surrounded the property.
Hours passed.
Nothing happened.
Then, just after midnight, Amelia felt a sharp pain.
She grabbed Daniel's arm.
“Daniel.”
“What?”
“I think…”
Her voice trembled.
“The baby is coming.”
Daniel stared at her.
Then immediately called the ambulance.
Outside the house, hidden beyond the trees, a figure watched the lights.
