Chapter 1 - The Girl Who Knew

The entire lobby seemed to stop breathing.

Victoria Hale stared at the faded photograph in the little girl’s hand while the accusation she had shouted only moments earlier hung in the air like smoke.

The security guard beside the front desk slowly lowered his radio.

Guests who had been whispering about a stolen handbag were now watching Victoria instead.

The girl could not have been older than eleven.

She wore a faded denim jacket, worn sneakers, and a small backpack that looked too light to contain much of anything.

Yet she stood beneath the enormous crystal chandelier with a composure that made Victoria feel strangely powerless.

“I know what you did.”

The girl’s voice was barely louder than a whisper.

Victoria forced herself to breathe.

“What is your name?”

The girl studied her.

“You already know.”

A murmur moved through the crowd.

Victoria’s fingers tightened around the edge of the marble front desk.

The child turned the photograph over again.

On the front were two young women standing beside the fountain that had once occupied the hotel courtyard.

One of them was unmistakably Victoria at twenty-three.

The other was her younger sister, Claire.

Claire had been officially missing for eleven years.

Police records claimed she had left California voluntarily after stealing money from the family business.

Victoria knew that story was a lie.

She had helped create it.

The girl pointed at Claire.

“My mother.”

Victoria felt the lobby tilt beneath her feet.

The security guard stepped closer.

“Ma’am, do you know this child?”

“No.”

Victoria answered too quickly.

The girl reached into her backpack.

Victoria’s heart slammed against her ribs.

The girl removed a small silver key attached to a tarnished brass tag.

The number engraved on it was 617.

Victoria stopped breathing.

Room 617 had not existed for more than a decade.

The entire sixth-floor east wing had been renovated after what the Hale family publicly described as an electrical fire.

But there had never been an electrical fire.

Victoria knew exactly what had happened inside Room 617.

So had Claire.

And apparently, somehow, this child knew too.

“My mother gave me this before she disappeared.”

The girl held the key carefully between two fingers.

“She told me that if I ever found Victoria Hale, I should ask her what happened in Room 617.”

Victoria’s knees weakened.

Hotel manager Daniel Mercer emerged from the hallway behind the front desk.

“What is happening here?”

Victoria looked at him.

Daniel had worked for the Hale family for twenty-five years.

He saw the photograph.

Then he saw the key.

For the first time in all the years Victoria had known him, Daniel Mercer looked terrified.

The little girl noticed.

Her expression sharpened.

“You recognize it too.”

Daniel opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Victoria moved toward the child.

“Give me the photograph.”

The security guard stepped between them.

“I think everyone should stay where they are.”

Victoria glared at him.

“This is my hotel.”

“Then you should have nothing to hide.”

The guard’s name tag read ETHAN COLE.

Victoria had barely noticed him before today.

Now she hated how closely he was watching her.

The girl slipped the photograph back into her jacket.

“My name is Sophie Bennett.”

Victoria froze.

Bennett had been Claire’s married name.

Sophie looked directly into Victoria’s eyes.

“My mother didn’t run away.”

Another silence descended.

“She came back to this hotel eleven years ago.”

Victoria felt Daniel staring at her.

Sophie continued.

“And somebody made sure she never walked out.”

Then the elevator behind them chimed.

Its polished gold doors opened.

A gray-haired man in an expensive suit stepped into the lobby.

Victoria’s father, Charles Hale, looked at Sophie.

May you like

Then he looked at the key to Room 617.

And the glass in his hand slipped from his fingers and shattered across the marble floor.
