Chapter 8 - Beneath the Hale Grand

Victoria did not go alone.
She wanted to.
Detective Ortiz refused.
Instead, police formed a covert team while Victoria entered the hotel basement wearing a hidden microphone.
The Hale Grand looked different from below.
There were no chandeliers.
No marble.
Only concrete walls, exposed pipes, and locked service rooms.
Victoria followed the instructions that arrived through Sophie’s phone.
TURN LEFT AFTER THE LAUNDRY ROOM.
She obeyed.
PASS THE OLD BOILER.
She continued.
Then another message.
OPEN DOOR B12.
Victoria reached the steel door.
It was unlocked.
Inside was an abandoned storage room.
Sophie sat on a chair.
Her hands were tied.
Victoria rushed forward.
A man stepped from the shadows.
“Stop.”
Victoria froze.
She knew him.
Martin Keane.
The hotel’s head of corporate security.
He had worked for Charles for eighteen years.
Sophie looked frightened but unharmed.
Martin held a gun low beside his leg.
“I’m sorry, Victoria.”
“Let her go.”
“I can’t.”
“You kidnapped a child.”
Martin’s jaw tightened.
“You don’t understand how many people are involved.”
“I’m beginning to.”
Martin laughed bitterly.
“No.”
He gestured around the basement.
“This hotel isn’t a hotel.”
Victoria said nothing.
“It’s a bank.”
“For secrets.”
“Your father collected them for thirty years.”
“Politicians.”
“Judges.”
“Police chiefs.”
“Businessmen.”
“He kept recordings.”
“Documents.”
“Photographs.”
Victoria stared at him.
“Blackmail.”
Martin nodded.
“Protection.”
“That’s what Charles called it.”
Sophie spoke.
“My mother found them.”
Martin looked toward her.
“Claire found enough to bring down half the city.”
Victoria’s pulse raced.
“Where are the records?”
Martin smiled faintly.
“If I knew, I wouldn’t need the girl.”
Sophie glared at him.
“I don’t know.”
Martin stepped toward her.
“Your mother left instructions.”
“She left warnings.”
Victoria tried to keep him talking.
“What happened to Claire?”
Martin’s expression shifted.
“I wasn’t there that night.”
“But you know.”
“I know she survived Room 617.”
Victoria’s breath caught.
“You’re sure?”
“Yes.”
Sophie stared at him.
“My mother lived?”
Martin nodded.
“For a while.”
Victoria’s knees weakened.
“Where did my father take her?”
“I don’t know.”
Martin glanced toward the door.
“But Evelyn knew.”
Victoria remembered her mother returning after two days.
“Did my mother help Claire escape?”
Martin hesitated.
“I think she tried.”
A loud metallic sound echoed somewhere behind the wall.
Martin spun around.
Police were moving.
He realized the trap.
“You brought them.”
Victoria stepped between him and Sophie.
“Of course I did.”
Martin raised the weapon.
Then the lights went out.
Sophie screamed.
A gunshot exploded through the darkness.
Victoria dropped to the floor.
Police shouted.
Another shot echoed.
Emergency lights flashed red.
Victoria crawled toward Sophie.
Ethan burst through the doorway with officers.
Martin was gone.
A hidden panel behind a storage shelf stood open.
Beyond it was a narrow tunnel.
Ethan cut Sophie free.
Victoria held her tightly.
Sophie trembled against her.
For the first time, she allowed Victoria to comfort her.
Ortiz entered moments later.
“Martin escaped through the tunnel.”
Victoria looked at the opening.
Sophie reached into her pocket.
“He dropped this.”
She held up a small key card.
