Chapter 2 - The Man Behind the Empire

Charles Hale had built the Hale Grand Hotel into one of the most exclusive properties in Los Angeles.

Politicians stayed there.

Celebrities disappeared into private elevators there.

Business deals worth hundreds of millions were signed behind its locked conference-room doors.

Nothing happened inside the Hale Grand without Charles eventually learning about it.

Yet for several seconds, he stood among the shattered glass unable to hide his fear.

Sophie noticed.

Children often noticed what adults underestimated.

“You know my mother too.”

Charles recovered quickly.

His expression hardened.

“I have no idea who you are.”

Sophie held up the photograph.

“You’re lying.”

Victoria stepped forward.

“Father, we need to handle this privately.”

“No.”

Ethan Cole’s voice cut through the lobby.

Everyone looked at the security guard.

Ethan pointed toward the ceiling.

“There are cameras recording this entire area.”

Charles’s gaze shifted toward him.

“You’re an employee.”

“I’m aware.”

“Then act like one.”

Ethan did not move.

Sophie’s eyes remained on Charles.

“My mother said rich people always think employees belong to them.”

Daniel Mercer flinched.

Charles heard it.

“So Claire filled your head with stories.”

The lobby erupted in whispers.

Victoria turned sharply toward him.

“You just said you didn’t know who she was.”

Charles realized his mistake.

Sophie smiled for the first time.

It was not a happy smile.

“Thank you.”

Charles’s jaw tightened.

Victoria grabbed her father’s arm.

“Come with me.”

He pulled away.

“You should have handled this before it became a spectacle.”

Sophie stared at them.

“Handled me?”

Victoria looked around at the gathering guests.

Phones were already raised.

The confrontation was being recorded from at least six different angles.

A public scandal could destroy years of carefully maintained reputation.

Victoria lowered her voice.

“Sophie, come upstairs with me.”

“No.”

“I can explain.”

“Then explain here.”

Victoria’s face tightened.

Charles stepped closer.

“Your mother was unstable.”

Sophie’s expression changed.

“She was frightened.”

“She stole from this family.”

“No.”

Charles leaned down slightly.

“You don’t know what happened eleven years ago.”

Sophie reached into her backpack again.

This time she removed a small digital voice recorder.

Charles became completely still.

“My mother knew people would say that.”

Sophie pressed a button.

Static crackled from the tiny speaker.

Then a woman’s voice filled the lobby.

Victoria recognized Claire instantly.

“If you’re listening to this, Sophie, it means I failed to come home.”

Victoria covered her mouth.

The recording continued.

“Do not believe anything Charles Hale says about me.”

Charles lunged toward the recorder.

Ethan blocked him.

“Don’t touch her.”

Charles stared at Ethan with cold fury.

Claire’s recorded voice continued.

“There are things hidden inside the Hale Grand Hotel that can prove what happened.”

Sophie looked at Victoria.

“And there’s more.”

Victoria’s eyes filled with dread.

Sophie stopped the recording.

“Why did you stop it?”

Victoria asked.

“Because my mother told me not to trust you until you answered one question.”

Sophie stepped closer.

Victoria could see Claire in her eyes now.

The resemblance hurt.

Sophie spoke slowly.

“The night my mother disappeared, she called you seven times.”

Victoria’s lips parted.

“You answered the seventh call.”

The lobby became silent again.

Sophie swallowed.

“What did she tell you?”

Victoria looked at Charles.

Her father gave the smallest shake of his head.

It was a warning.

Victoria had obeyed that look her entire life.

But Sophie was standing in front of her carrying the consequences of that obedience.

Victoria closed her eyes.

Then she finally spoke.

“She told me she had found proof.”

“Proof of what?”

Victoria opened her eyes.

“That your grandfather murdered someone inside this hotel.”

Charles’s face turned white.

May you like

And somewhere behind the front desk, Daniel Mercer whispered one word.

“Victoria.”
