Chapter 16 - When the Lights Went Dark

The Hale Grand rooftop contained an old maintenance structure dating back to the hotel’s original construction.
Claire had hidden evidence there before confronting Charles.
She assumed no one would search above the penthouse level.
Victoria, Claire, Sophie, Ethan, and federal investigators returned to the hotel that evening.
Reporters surrounded every entrance.
The story had become national news.
Charles Hale had been arrested.
Commissioner Raymond Walsh had disappeared.
Claire Bennett, officially missing for eleven years, had returned alive.
Nothing about the Hale family remained private anymore.
They reached the roof just after sunset.
Claire walked slowly.
Sophie held her hand.
Victoria noticed how naturally they fit together despite the lost years.
Claire pointed toward an old ventilation housing.
“There.”
Agents removed a metal panel.
Inside was a waterproof case.
It contained another drive.
Claire exhaled.
“I thought Charles found it.”
Ethan asked.
“What’s on it?”
“Everything Michael gave me.”
Claire looked toward Victoria.
“And something else.”
They entered a rooftop office.
The drive contained a video.
Michael Torres sat in Room 617.
Claire had secretly recorded him.
Michael described Charles’s financial system.
Then he named Raymond Walsh.
“He’s the real danger.”
Michael stared into Claire’s camera.
“Charles thinks money makes him powerful.”
“Walsh understands that fear is stronger.”
Michael revealed that Walsh had maintained his own duplicate archive.
He planned to use Charles’s network after eventually removing him.
The final file contained account numbers linking Walsh to offshore funds.
Ortiz immediately transmitted the data to federal teams.
Then every light inside the hotel went out.
The rooftop plunged into darkness.
Sophie gasped.
Emergency generators should have activated instantly.
They did not.
Ethan drew his weapon.
“Everybody down.”
A helicopter sounded in the distance.
Victoria looked toward the neighboring rooftop.
A figure moved near the stairwell.
Gunfire shattered a window.
Agents returned fire.
Claire pulled Sophie behind a concrete column.
Victoria crawled toward them.
Ortiz shouted into her radio.
“Walsh is inside the building.”
Victoria stared.
“How?”
Ethan answered.
“He ran security operations for years.”
“He knows every entrance.”
Another sound came from the stairwell.
Footsteps.
Walsh had returned to the place where the conspiracy began.
Claire looked at Victoria.
“He wants the drive.”
Victoria nodded.
Sophie whispered.
“Then let him think he got it.”
Everyone looked at her.
She held up her backpack.
“I still have the old recorder.”
Victoria understood.
They placed an empty flash drive inside the backpack.
Sophie remained hidden.
Victoria carried it toward the stairwell.
Walsh appeared moments later.
He looked nothing like the respected police commissioner whose photograph appeared on government websites.
His jacket was torn.
His face was desperate.
“Give me the drive.”
Victoria held up the backpack.
“You murdered my mother.”
Walsh smiled.
“Your mother chose the wrong side.”
Victoria felt rage rise.
Then she remembered Claire.
Sophie.
Eleven years of fear.
She stayed calm.
Walsh stepped closer.
“Give it to me.”
Victoria dropped the backpack.
He grabbed it.
Then Ethan’s voice came from behind him.
“Raymond Walsh.”
Walsh turned.
Ethan aimed his weapon.
“My father spent twenty years waiting for this moment.”
May you like
Walsh raised his own gun.
And the rooftop exploded into chaos.
