Chapter 9 - The Archive of Secrets

The key card opened a door that did not exist on any modern hotel blueprint.

Ethan found the entrance behind a false wall near the underground parking garage.

Police photographed everything before entering.

Victoria stood beside Sophie while Detective Ortiz swiped the card.

The lock clicked.

Inside was a climate-controlled room lined with hundreds of boxes.

Each box carried a name.

Some belonged to politicians.

Some to police officers.

Some to celebrities.

Some to businessmen Victoria recognized from childhood dinners.

Charles Hale had built an empire out of secrets.

Sophie stared at the shelves.

“My mother knew about this?”

Victoria nodded slowly.

“Probably.”

Ethan walked toward a section marked FAMILY.

There were five boxes.

CHARLES.

EVELYN.

VICTORIA.

CLAIRE.

SOPHIE.

Victoria’s stomach turned.

“There’s one for her?”

Sophie stepped closer.

Her name was written on a box dated eleven years earlier.

Ortiz stopped her from touching it.

Evidence technicians opened the container.

Inside were photographs of Sophie as a baby.

Hospital records.

School documents.

Addresses.

Charles had been tracking her entire life.

Sophie looked at Victoria.

“He knew where I was.”

Victoria felt physically ill.

“He knew.”

Sophie’s voice trembled.

“He let everyone believe Mom abandoned me.”

Victoria could not defend him anymore.

Nobody could.

The CLAIRE box contained copies of journals, photographs, and correspondence.

One envelope was labeled AFTER 617.

Ortiz opened it.

Inside was a photograph of Claire.

The timestamp was three months after her disappearance.

She was alive.

Standing outside a medical clinic in northern California.

Sophie began crying.

“My mother survived.”

Victoria touched the edge of the table.

Claire had been alive while Victoria mourned her.

Alive while Charles convinced everyone she had fled the country.

Ethan found another photograph.

Claire entering a bus station.

Then another.

Claire walking beside Evelyn.

Victoria whispered.

“Mom helped her.”

Ortiz examined the dates.

“The final image was taken ten months after the hotel incident.”

Sophie looked up.

“Then what happened?”

No one answered.

An evidence officer suddenly called Ortiz.

“There’s a drive in the bottom.”

A hard drive was removed from beneath the documents.

It contained encrypted video files.

One opened without a password.

The footage came from the hotel underground garage.

Claire appeared on screen.

She was injured but walking.

Evelyn held her arm.

Charles followed.

There was no audio.

They entered a sedan.

Four hours later, the sedan returned.

Charles was driving.

Evelyn was no longer inside.

Neither was Claire.

The next clip had been recorded the following afternoon.

Evelyn returned in another car.

Alone.

Sophie wiped her tears.

“My grandmother knew where Mom went.”

Victoria nodded.

“But she never told me.”

Ethan searched through Evelyn’s archive box.

He found dozens of letters.

Most were unopened.

One was addressed to Victoria.

The date was one week before Evelyn’s death.

Victoria stared at her own name.

Ortiz opened the envelope with gloves.

Inside was a single sheet.

Victoria read it aloud.

“Victoria, I have failed both my daughters.”

Her voice cracked.

“Claire is alive.”

Everyone froze.

Victoria kept reading.

“I know where she is.”

Sophie grabbed the table.

The letter continued.

“But Charles discovered I was helping her.”

“If anything happens to me, go to Saint Agnes.”

Victoria looked at Ortiz.

“What is Saint Agnes?”

Ethan was already searching his father’s old notes.

Then he found it.

His expression changed.

“Saint Agnes Psychiatric Hospital.”

Victoria stared at him.

“It closed seven years ago.”

May you like

Ethan turned the page.

“And Charles Hale owned the company that controlled it.”
