Chapter 11 - The House by the Lake

Claire’s map led directly to the old Hale lake house.
Police surrounded the property before anyone approached.
The cabin stood among tall pine trees overlooking dark blue water.
No vehicles were visible.
The front door was locked.
Ortiz obtained emergency authorization to enter.
Inside, they found signs someone had lived there recently.
Fresh food.
Medication.
Books.
A half-finished cup of tea.
Sophie was kept outside until the property was secured.
Victoria walked through the living room.
Everything looked almost exactly as it had when she and Claire were teenagers.
The old piano remained near the window.
Their mother’s paintings still hung upstairs.
Martin Keane had preserved the house.
Why?
A bedroom door opened.
Victoria spun around.
An elderly woman stood in the hallway.
Victoria almost screamed.
Then she recognized her.
“Nora?”
Nora Ellis had been Claire’s nurse at Saint Agnes.
She was now in her seventies.
Nora raised both hands.
“I’m not armed.”
Ortiz approached.
“Where is Martin Keane?”
Nora looked frightened.
“He left last night.”
“Where is Claire Bennett?”
Nora’s eyes filled with tears.
Sophie entered behind the officer outside before anyone could stop her.
Nora saw her.
Her face crumpled.
“Oh, Sophie.”
Sophie froze.
“You know me?”
Nora nodded.
“I held you when you were two days old.”
Victoria stared.
“Where is my sister?”
Nora sat down slowly.
“She was here.”
Sophie stepped closer.
“Was?”
“Until six months ago.”
Sophie’s hope faltered.
“Where did she go?”
“I don’t know.”
Nora explained everything.
Evelyn had secretly arranged Claire’s escape from Saint Agnes after discovering Charles intended to keep her committed indefinitely.
Martin Keane had helped.
Not because he was loyal to Claire.
Because he had begun to fear Charles.
For years, Martin and Nora moved Claire between safe locations.
Claire was traumatized and physically weak after prolonged medication, but she remained determined to reunite with Sophie.
Charles made that impossible.
He threatened Margaret Bennett.
He threatened Sophie’s school.
He watched everyone.
Claire decided Sophie would be safer if Charles believed she had vanished permanently.
“So my mother stayed away to protect me?”
Sophie whispered.
Nora nodded.
“She watched from a distance.”
Sophie began crying.
Victoria asked the hardest question.
“Why didn’t Claire contact me?”
Nora looked directly at her.
“She didn’t trust you.”
Victoria accepted the words without flinching.
“She thought you still belonged to Charles.”
“She wasn’t wrong.”
Nora continued.
“Then six months ago, Claire discovered Charles was preparing to sell the hotel.”
Victoria frowned.
“The sale was confidential.”
“Claire knew.”
“She believed the sale would destroy the archive.”
Nora looked toward Sophie.
“She decided it was finally time.”
“Time for what?”
“To finish what Michael Torres started.”
Victoria felt cold.
“Where did she go?”
Nora reached inside a drawer.
“She left this.”
A sealed envelope was addressed to Victoria.
Inside was a train ticket dated six months earlier.
Destination: Los Angeles.
And a photograph.
Claire stood across the street from the Hale Grand.
The timestamp showed she had returned to the city.
Sophie stared at the image.
“My mom came back.”
Nora nodded.
“She came back for you.”
Victoria turned toward the window.
Somewhere in Los Angeles, Claire might still be alive.
Then Ortiz’s phone rang.
She listened.
Her expression hardened.
“We found Martin Keane.”
Victoria turned.
May you like
Ortiz lowered the phone.
“He’s dead.”
