Chapter 13 - The Time Capsule

Federal agents entered the Hale Grand courtyard shortly after midnight.
The garden was closed.
Guests were moved away from the area.
Victoria directed investigators toward the remains of the original fountain.
She and Claire had buried a metal lunchbox beneath it when Victoria was fifteen and Claire was thirteen.
They filled it with photographs, letters, movie tickets, and ridiculous promises about their futures.
Victoria had completely forgotten about it.
Claire had not.
Workers removed several stone tiles.
Twenty minutes later, they found the box.
The exterior was rusted.
Inside, beneath old childhood photographs, was a waterproof envelope Claire had added years later.
It contained a flash drive.
The files were devastating.
Payments.
Names.
Dates.
Secret recordings.
Evidence of bribery involving business executives, local officials, law-enforcement officers, and one federal judge.
Charles Hale had not simply committed crimes.
He had created a system where powerful people protected one another.
Sophie stared at a childhood photograph of Victoria and Claire sitting beside the fountain.
They looked happy.
“What happened to you?”
Sophie asked.
Victoria understood the question was larger than the photograph.
“We grew up.”
“That doesn’t explain it.”
“No.”
Victoria sat beside her.
“My father always needed someone to be afraid of him.”
“He made Claire the difficult daughter.”
“I became the obedient one.”
Sophie looked at her.
“And you liked being the favorite?”
Victoria did not lie.
“Sometimes.”
Sophie’s expression hardened.
“That’s terrible.”
“Yes.”
Victoria looked toward the old photograph.
“Claire paid for my comfort.”
Sophie said nothing.
Later that night, federal investigators identified several locations connected to the names on Claire’s list.
One property stood out.
A private medical residence in Malibu owned through a shell company.
Security-camera records showed Martin Keane visiting it repeatedly.
The final visit occurred six months earlier.
The same week Claire returned to Los Angeles.
Ortiz assembled a team.
Before leaving, Victoria received another message from an unknown number.
DO NOT COME LOOKING FOR HER.
A photograph followed.
Claire sat in a chair beside a window.
She looked older.
Thin.
Tired.
But alive.
Sophie saw the image.
“Mom.”
Victoria immediately handed the phone to investigators.
A second message arrived.
GIVE US THE DRIVE.
OR SOPHIE BECOMES AN ORPHAN AGAIN.
Sophie stopped breathing.
Victoria felt something inside her change.
For decades, threats from powerful men had controlled her choices.
Charles threatened reputation.
Money.
Family.
Security.
Fear had become a language Victoria understood too well.
This time she refused to speak it.
She typed one response.
NO.
Ethan looked at her.
“They may hurt Claire.”
Victoria’s eyes filled.
“I know.”
“Then why provoke them?”
“Because giving them the drive won’t protect Claire.”
Victoria looked at Sophie.
“It will only erase the reason they’ve kept her alive.”
Sophie slowly nodded.
The federal team prepared to move on the Malibu property.
Then Victoria’s phone rang again.
Charles Hale’s name appeared.
She answered.
Her father sounded calm.
“Victoria.”
“What?”
“You need to come see me.”
“I have nothing to say to you.”
“I know who has Claire.”
Victoria went completely still.
May you like
Charles continued.
“And if you want your sister alive by sunrise, you’re finally going to listen to me.”
