Chapter 19 - The Promise Finally Kept

A year after Sophie entered the Hale Grand carrying the designer handbag, the hotel reopened under a new name.

The Grand Courtyard Hotel no longer belonged to the Hale family.

Hundreds of former employees owned shares.

Daniel Mercer was not there.

Charles Hale was not there.

Raymond Walsh would never walk through the doors again.

Claire stood beside the restored fountain.

Sophie held her hand.

Victoria remained a few feet away.

She had resigned from hotel management after completing the ownership transition.

For the first time in her adult life, she had no empire to defend.

It felt like freedom.

Reporters gathered for the opening of the Claire Bennett Center.

Claire hated cameras.

Sophie loved watching her mother complain about them.

Victoria laughed more than she had in years.

Before the ceremony, Claire handed Victoria a small envelope.

“What is this?”

“Something Mom wrote.”

Victoria stopped.

“Evelyn?”

Claire nodded.

“I found it after I escaped Saint Agnes.”

“Why didn’t you give it to me earlier?”

“Because I wasn’t ready.”

Victoria opened the letter.

Her mother’s handwriting filled the page.

“My dear Victoria.”

Victoria’s eyes blurred.

“I know you believe obedience will keep this family together.”

“It won’t.”

“Your father taught you that disagreement is betrayal.”

“It is not.”

“Sometimes loving someone means refusing to protect the worst thing they have done.”

Victoria swallowed.

Claire watched quietly.

The letter continued.

“If I fail to save Claire, I hope you will someday find the courage I lacked for too long.”

“Do not inherit our silence.”

Victoria pressed the letter against her chest.

“I wish she could see this.”

Claire looked around the courtyard.

“I think she’d criticize the flowers.”

Victoria laughed through tears.

“She absolutely would.”

Sophie approached them.

“Are you both going to cry all day?”

Claire wiped her eyes.

“Probably.”

Sophie handed Victoria the original photograph.

“I want you to keep it.”

Victoria shook her head.

“It belongs to you.”

“No.”

Sophie turned it over.

“The promise was written to you.”

Victoria stared at Claire’s faded message.

Victoria… if anything ever happens to me, please keep your promise.

Eleven years ago, Victoria had failed.

But promises did not always disappear when broken.

Sometimes they waited.

Sometimes they returned in the hands of an angry little girl.

Victoria closed her fingers around the photograph.

“I’ll protect it.”

Sophie shook her head.

“That’s not the promise.”

Victoria looked at her.

Sophie smiled.

“You were supposed to protect me.”

Victoria’s eyes filled again.

Claire watched her sister carefully.

Victoria knelt so she was eye level with Sophie.

“I can’t change the years I wasn’t there.”

“I know.”

“But for every year I have left, you’ll never have to wonder whether I’ll come when you call.”

Sophie stared at her.

“Even seven times?”

Victoria laughed.

“Especially seven times.”

Sophie hugged her.

Victoria froze for half a second.

Then she wrapped her arms around the child.

Claire joined them.

Three people stood beside the fountain where two sisters had once buried childhood promises.

May you like

The cameras flashed.

This time, none of them looked away.
