Chapter 5 - Claire's Last Recording

Police arrived while Ethan was still holding the memory card.
Detective Lena Ortiz took control of Room 617 within minutes.
She separated everyone.
She photographed the room.
She sealed the necklace inside an evidence bag.
Charles demanded his attorney.
Sophie demanded to hear what was on the card.
Ortiz refused until it could be processed safely.
By late afternoon, the Hale Grand lobby was crowded with reporters.
Videos of Sophie confronting Victoria had already spread online.
The story was no longer containable.
Victoria watched news vans arrive through the windows of her private office.
Charles paced behind her.
“You have destroyed us.”
Victoria stared at him.
“No.”
She looked over her shoulder.
“You did that eleven years ago.”
Charles lowered his voice.
“You have no idea what happened.”
“Then tell me.”
“It was business.”
Victoria felt sick.
“Michael Torres was business?”
Charles’s face revealed too much.
Victoria stepped toward him.
“You killed him.”
“I protected this family.”
“You killed him.”
Charles looked away.
Victoria whispered.
“And Claire found out.”
He said nothing.
That silence became another confession.
Hours later, Detective Ortiz called Victoria, Sophie, Ethan, and Daniel into a conference room.
Charles remained elsewhere with his attorney.
A laptop sat on the table.
Ortiz closed the door.
“We recovered three files.”
Sophie sat very still.
“One is corrupted.”
Ortiz continued.
“One contains financial documents.”
She looked toward Victoria.
“The third is audio.”
Sophie whispered.
“My mother?”
Ortiz nodded.
She pressed play.
Claire’s voice came through the speakers.
“I don’t know how much time I have.”
Sophie covered her mouth.
Victoria closed her eyes.
Claire continued.
“Michael Torres discovered that my father was moving hotel money through companies connected to organized crime.”
Daniel’s face tightened.
“He confronted him.”
The recording crackled.
“Michael told me Charles threatened him.”
Claire breathed shakily.
“Three nights later, Michael disappeared.”
Sophie stared at the laptop.
“I found Michael’s watch in Room 617.”
Ortiz paused the recording.
Victoria looked at Daniel.
“You knew?”
Daniel’s eyes were wet.
“I found the room the next morning.”
“Why didn’t you tell police?”
Daniel swallowed.
“Charles threatened my wife.”
Sophie stared at him.
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“I hated myself every day after that.”
Ortiz resumed the file.
Claire’s voice returned.
“I copied the financial records.”
“If I disappear, they’re hidden somewhere Victoria can find.”
Victoria leaned forward.
Claire suddenly began whispering.
“Someone’s outside.”
A knock sounded in the recording.
Sophie froze.
Claire breathed rapidly.
Then a man’s voice came through the door.
“Claire.”
Charles.
Victoria’s fingers dug into the table.
The recorded Claire whispered.
“He found me.”
There was another knock.
“Open the door.”
Claire continued quietly.
“Sophie, if you ever hear this, I love you.”
Sophie began crying silently.
“I’m sorry.”
The recording captured the door opening.
Charles spoke.
“What have you done?”
Claire answered.
“What you should have done years ago.”
Then came a struggle.
A crash.
Claire screamed.
Another voice suddenly entered the room.
A woman.
“Charles, stop!”
Victoria looked up.
She recognized the voice.
Everyone did.
It belonged to Evelyn Hale.
Victoria and Claire’s mother.
Evelyn had died eight years earlier.
Ortiz stopped the recording.
Victoria stared at the screen.
“My mother was there.”
Daniel whispered.
“Oh God.”
Sophie wiped her face.
“What happened next?”
Ortiz looked troubled.
“The recording ends twenty-seven seconds later.”
She pressed play again.
Evelyn screamed.
Claire shouted.
Then came a loud impact.
Silence.
Finally, Charles spoke.
“Call Daniel.”
Daniel went pale.
Then another voice answered.
“I’m already here.”
Everyone turned toward the hotel manager.

Daniel Mercer stared at the laptop.
His entire body began to tremble.
