Chapter 1 - The Door He Chose

The suitcase wheels scraped across the hardwood floor like they were dragging something heavier than clothes.

Claire sat frozen on the kitchen stool, one hand covering her face and the other resting protectively over her swollen belly.

Her wrist still burned where Ethan had held it.

Not hard enough to leave a dramatic mark.

Hard enough that she would remember exactly how powerless she had felt.

Their five-year-old son, Noah, stood between the kitchen and hallway with a half-eaten piece of bread in his tiny hand.

“Daddy?”

Ethan stopped near the front door.

For one second, Claire thought he might turn around.

She thought he might look at his son.

She thought he might see what he was doing.

Instead, he tightened his grip on the suitcase handle.

“Go eat your breakfast, buddy.”

Noah stared at him.

“But where are you going?”

Ethan closed his eyes.

Claire saw his shoulders rise with a slow breath.

“Just away for a while.”

Claire lowered her hands from her face.

“You said you were done.”

Ethan looked back at her.

His expression hardened again.

“I am.”

Those two words landed harder than anything else that morning.

Behind Claire, Ethan’s sister, Megan, stood near the dining room entrance holding her phone against her chest.

She had been recording.

Claire knew it.

Ethan knew it too.

Neither of them understood why Megan had started recording before the argument became ugly.

Ethan’s mother, Linda, remained beside the dining table.

His father, Richard, stood behind her with his arms folded.

Neither one tried to stop Ethan.

That hurt Claire almost as much as Ethan leaving.

Seven years.

Seven years of birthdays, Christmas dinners, family vacations, hospital visits, mortgages, scraped knees, anniversaries, and Sunday breakfasts.

And now everyone stood around watching her marriage collapse as if they were waiting for the final scene of a television show.

Ethan opened the door.

Claire forced herself to speak.

“Before you leave, tell Noah why.”

Linda suddenly stepped forward.

“Claire, enough.”

Claire turned toward her.

“No.”

Linda’s face tightened.

“This is between you and Ethan.”

Claire gave a bitter laugh.

“You made sure it stopped being between us weeks ago.”

Ethan looked toward his mother.

That tiny movement did not escape Claire.

Something passed between them.

Something she had noticed many times recently.

A glance.

A warning.

An understanding she had never been included in.

Claire slowly stood.

“Ethan.”

He looked at her.

“What did your mother tell you?”

Silence.

Linda’s eyes changed.

Only for a fraction of a second.

But Claire saw fear.

Ethan stepped through the doorway.

“Don’t do this.”

“Do what?”

“Turn everyone against everyone.”

Claire stared at him.

“I don’t have to.”

She pointed toward the phone lying on the kitchen counter.

“The truth seems pretty good at doing that by itself.”

Ethan glanced toward the phone.

Then toward Megan.

His face changed.

“Megan.”

Megan swallowed.

“What?”

“Why were you recording before I came downstairs?”

Nobody moved.

Megan’s fingers tightened around her own phone.

“I thought something might happen.”

Ethan stepped back inside.

“What does that mean?”

Megan looked at Linda.

Linda’s voice became sharp.

“Stop this nonsense.”

But Megan was staring at Claire now.

And Claire realized Megan was terrified.

Not of Ethan.

Not of the argument.

Of Linda.

“Megan.”

Claire spoke softly.

“What did you know?”

Megan’s eyes filled with tears.

“I’m sorry.”

Linda moved quickly toward her.

“Megan, be quiet.”

Richard grabbed Linda’s arm.

For the first time that morning, his voice rose.

“Let her talk.”

Everyone froze.

Megan looked down at the counter.

“At two this morning, Mom called me.”

Ethan’s face went pale.

“What did she say?”

Megan looked directly at him.

“She said you were leaving Claire today.”

Claire stopped breathing.

Megan continued.

“And she said I needed to be here when it happened.”

Ethan slowly turned toward his mother.

Linda said nothing.

Megan wiped her cheek.

“But that wasn’t the worst part.”

Claire felt Noah press himself against her leg.

“What was?”

Megan looked at the phone still recording on the kitchen counter.

May you like

“She told me to make sure Claire never found out why.”
