Chapter 18 - The Last Attempt

Linda was not truly missing.

She had turned off her phone.

Left Richard’s house.

Withdrawn cash.

And disappeared for six hours.

Because of the investigation, everyone feared she might destroy records.

Richard knew one place she might go.

The old family property.

His mother’s house.

Authorities arrived there first.

Linda was inside.

So were boxes of papers.

Nothing dramatic happened.

No chase.

No confrontation in the street.

But the discovery ended her ability to control the story.

The records spoke for themselves.

Years of hidden financial transactions.

Rental income.

Unauthorized transfers.

Property assignments.

Loans.

Emails.

Notes.

Daniel’s invoices.

The picture was larger than Claire’s marriage.

Linda had spent years arranging the family around her fears.

When money became tight, she hid it.

When Richard questioned her, she redirected him.

When Ethan became independent, she tightened her grip.

When Claire’s inherited house offered another financial escape, Linda decided Claire herself was the obstacle.

Two days later, Claire agreed to see Linda.

Only with Samantha present.

Richard attended separately.

Ethan did not come.

Megan refused.

Linda sat across from Claire in a conference room.

She looked smaller without her house, her family table, or her commanding voice.

But she was still Linda.

“You ruined this family.”

Claire almost smiled.

“No.”

Linda leaned forward.

“You turned Ethan against us.”

“You did that.”

“He would never have left the company without you.”

“He wanted to leave before he met me.”

Linda’s jaw tightened.

“You encouraged it.”

“Yes.”

“At least you admit it.”

Claire stared at her.

“I encouraged my husband to choose the career he wanted.”

Linda laughed bitterly.

“You made him think he didn’t need us.”

Claire finally understood.

That was the heart of everything.

Linda did not want to be loved.

She needed to be necessary.

Any independence felt like abandonment.

Any boundary felt like betrayal.

Any person who gave Ethan another home became competition.

Claire spoke quietly.

“You could have stayed part of his life.”

Linda looked away.

“You were never losing him until you tried to own him.”

For the first time, Linda’s expression cracked.

Only for a second.

Then she recovered.

“What happens now?”

Samantha answered.

“The legal process continues.”

Linda glared at Claire.

“You could stop it.”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

“We are family.”

“That word does not erase documents.”

Linda’s eyes narrowed.

“What about Ethan?”

“What about him?”

“He needs his parents.”

“He needed parents who protected him from their problems.”

Richard lowered his head.

Linda looked furious.

Claire continued.

“And Noah needed grandparents who did not use him as leverage.”

Linda stood.

The meeting ended there.

Outside, Richard approached Claire.

“I’m selling my share of the company if it survives.”

Claire nodded.

“What will you do?”

“I don’t know.”

That answer sounded healthier than pretending.

Richard looked toward the parking lot.

“Ethan won’t speak to me.”

“He may someday.”

“Do you think he should forgive me?”

Claire thought.

“That isn’t my decision.”

Richard nodded.

“You’re right.”

He walked away.

That evening, Claire went into labor.

Three weeks early.

The contractions began quietly.

She tried to convince herself they were false alarms.

Then the pain returned.

Regular.

Strong.

Noah was asleep upstairs.

Megan was staying over.

Claire gripped the kitchen counter.

“Megan.”

Megan looked up from the couch.

“What?”

Claire breathed carefully.

“I think it’s time.”

Megan jumped up.

“Now?”

Claire nodded.

Another contraction arrived.

Megan grabbed the hospital bag.

“Should I call Ethan?”

Claire froze.

Months ago, there would have been no question.

Now everything was different.

Another contraction.

Megan waited.

Claire closed her eyes.

Then she said.

“Yes.”

Ethan answered on the first ring.

He arrived seven minutes later.

No suitcase.

No anger.

No demands.

He walked through the same doorway he had left.

May you like

But this time he came because Claire asked him to.
