Chapter 15 - What Linda Needed Back

Megan put the call on speaker.
Linda did not wait.
“Tell your father to bring that box home.”
Megan looked at Richard.
“He’s here.”
Silence.
Then Linda’s voice changed.
“Richard.”
He stepped closer.
“It’s over.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
“You have no idea what you’re doing.”
“I know exactly what I did.”
“You’ll lose everything.”
“Maybe.”
“The stores.”
“Maybe.”
“The house.”
“Our house is paid for.”
“The retirement accounts.”
Richard closed his eyes.
“If that is the consequence, it is the consequence.”
Linda laughed sharply.
“You think Claire is going to protect you?”
Claire said nothing.
Linda continued.
“She will hand everything to investigators.”
Richard looked at Claire.
“I expect her to.”
Linda stopped talking.
For the first time, there was genuine confusion in her silence.
Richard continued.
“I forged nothing.”
Claire watched him.
“But I allowed Daniel to submit documents I knew were misleading.”
His voice shook.
“I let Ethan sign papers without explaining them.”
He swallowed.
“And when I realized what Linda and Daniel were doing to the marriage, I waited too long to stop it.”
Linda snapped.
“You are pathetic.”
Richard looked almost relieved.
“No.”
He spoke quietly.
“I was afraid.”
Megan started crying.
Richard turned toward the phone.
“I’m not anymore.”
Linda hung up.
Claire finally brought the box inside.
Samantha arrived again.
Marcus joined by video.
They opened everything carefully.
Contracts.
Emails.
Loan applications.
Personal guarantees.
Financial projections.
Then Samantha found a sealed envelope marked CONFIDENTIAL - PLAN B.
Everyone stopped.
Claire felt a chill.
“Open it.”
Samantha did.
Inside was a draft letter.
It claimed Claire had shown signs of emotional instability during pregnancy.
The letter referenced crying.
Fatigue.
Irritability.
Arguments.
Completely ordinary things.
But written in cold clinical language, they looked sinister.
At the bottom was space for three witness signatures.
Linda Bennett.
Richard Bennett.
Megan Bennett.
Megan stared.
“She wanted all three of us to sign.”
Richard looked sick.
“I never saw this.”
Claire read further.
The letter requested that Ethan temporarily manage all household financial decisions.
Including property matters.
Samantha looked furious.
“This would not automatically give him legal authority.”
Claire nodded.
“But they wanted the bank to believe it might.”
“Exactly.”
Richard whispered.
“Linda said the bank just needed reassurance.”
Claire turned toward him.
“You didn’t ask what that meant.”
“No.”
He looked ashamed.
“I didn’t.”
Samantha continued sorting.
Then she found another page.
A checklist.
Recording of Claire emotional.
Witness statements.
Temporary separation confirmation.
Property consent.
Emergency financial authority.
Claire stared at the first item.
Recording.
“They expected Megan to capture me losing control.”
Megan nodded slowly.
“But I recorded Ethan instead.”
Richard covered his face.
One small change had unraveled months of planning.
Claire’s tears came suddenly.
Not loud.
Not dramatic.
She simply sat at the table and cried.
Megan wrapped an arm around her.
Richard stepped backward, giving her space.
Claire was not crying because she felt weak.
She cried because for months she had questioned herself.
Maybe pregnancy made her sensitive.
Maybe she had become difficult.
Maybe Ethan’s distance was partly her fault.
Now she understood.
People had deliberately distorted ordinary moments until Ethan saw danger where there was none.
But even knowing that did not repair the marriage.
It only explained the wreckage.
Samantha’s phone buzzed.
She read a message.
Then looked at Claire.
“The lender responded.”
Claire wiped her face.
“What did they say?”
“They froze the pending property action.”
Claire released a breath.
“And?”
Samantha hesitated.
“They also reported the disputed documents internally.”
Richard nodded.
“I expected that.”
But Samantha was still reading.
“What?”
Claire asked.
“There is another issue.”
She turned the screen around.
The lender had identified a second property listed in the same package.
A property none of them recognized.
Megan read the address.
Then she went pale.
“That’s Grandma’s old house.”
Richard looked up sharply.
“My mother’s house?”
Megan nodded.
Richard whispered.
“She died four years ago.”
Claire looked at Samantha.
“Who owns it now?”
Samantha searched the county record.
Her expression tightened.
“According to the filing.”
She paused.
“Linda does.”
Richard stared.
“No.”
Samantha looked at him.
“Yes.”
Richard shook his head.
“That house was supposed to be sold and divided between me and my sister.”
The room went silent again.
The scheme had not started with Claire.
May you like
She had only been the newest target.
