Chapter 4 - The Signature

Claire had expected denial.
Instead, Richard sat back down.
That frightened her more.
Linda remained near the hallway, gripping her purse so tightly her knuckles whitened.
Megan whispered.
“Dad?”
Richard stared at the floor.
“It wasn’t supposed to become this.”
Claire placed both hands on the kitchen counter.
“What did you do?”
Richard sighed.
“Three years ago, the company had cash-flow problems.”
Ethan’s family owned a small chain of specialty hardware stores across three counties.
The business looked successful from the outside.
New trucks.
Holiday parties.
A lake cabin.
Nice clothes.
Claire had never asked questions because Richard treated financial details like classified information.
“We needed collateral.”
Claire felt her stomach tighten.
“And you used this house?”
Richard shook his head.
“Not exactly.”
Linda snapped.
“Richard, stop talking.”
He ignored her.
“We used a letter stating that Ethan held an ownership interest.”
Claire stared.
“He doesn’t.”
“I know.”
“What letter?”
Richard looked ashamed.
“A declaration.”
“Signed by who?”
Silence.
Claire already knew.
She just needed him to say it.
“Richard.”
He swallowed.
“Ethan.”
Megan frowned.
“Ethan wouldn’t sign that.”
Richard looked at her.
“He didn’t knowingly.”
Claire felt the room tilt.
“What does that mean?”
Linda interrupted again.
“It means paperwork was included with company documents.”
Claire stared at her.
“You hid it inside something else?”
Linda’s expression told Claire everything.
A memory hit her.
Three summers ago.
Ethan had come home complaining that his father made him sign a stack of insurance and vendor paperwork.
He joked that Richard still treated paper signatures like it was 1995.
Claire had been making dinner.
Noah had been two.
She had laughed.
Then forgotten about it.
Until now.
“What happens if the lender discovers Ethan doesn’t own the property?”
Richard answered quietly.
“The loan could be called.”
“How much?”
He hesitated.
Claire slammed her palm against the counter.
“How much?”
“Eight hundred thousand.”
Megan covered her mouth.
Claire stopped breathing for a moment.
Eight hundred thousand dollars.
The room suddenly felt too small.
Linda stepped forward.
“We have been paying it.”
“That isn’t the point.”
“We never missed a payment.”
“You used my property in fraudulent paperwork.”
Linda rolled her eyes.
“Don’t use dramatic words.”
Claire stared at her.
“Which word bothers you?”
“Claire.”
“Fraudulent?”
Linda’s jaw tightened.
“Or mine?”
Richard stood.
“We planned to correct it.”
“When?”
He said nothing.
Claire looked toward the front door.
Now she understood why Linda wanted her gone.
A separation could create confusion over the property.
A nasty custody dispute could distract her.
If Claire appeared unstable, maybe Ethan could argue for temporary access to the house.
Maybe someone believed they could force a signature later.
Megan suddenly remembered something.
“The envelope.”
Everyone looked at her.
“What envelope?”
Megan faced her father.
“The one Daniel brought last week.”
Richard’s face changed.
Linda snapped.
“Megan.”
But Megan kept talking.
“He asked me if Ethan was home.”
Claire’s pulse quickened.
“What was in it?”
“I don’t know.”
Megan looked at Linda.
“But Mom said they only needed Ethan to convince Claire to sign one page.”
Claire slowly turned toward Linda.
“What page?”
Linda grabbed her coat.
“This conversation is over.”
Claire reached for her phone.
“No.”
Linda stopped.
Claire held it up.
“The conversation started being documented twelve minutes ago.”
Linda’s face went pale.
Megan looked confused.
“You stopped the recording.”
Claire shook her head.
“I started a new one.”
Richard sat down again.
Linda stared at Claire.
“You wouldn’t.”
Claire looked her directly in the eyes.
“You came into my house planning to record me.”
She glanced toward Noah.
“You helped convince my husband I was unstable.”
Then she placed a hand over her belly.
“And you expected me to protect your secrets?”
Linda said nothing.
Claire’s phone buzzed.
A text from Ethan appeared.
It contained one photograph.
The picture showed the page Daniel had told him Claire needed to sign.
At the top were four words.
PROPERTY CONSENT AND TRANSFER.
Claire zoomed in.
Then she saw the signature line.

Her name had already been filled in.
