Chapter 7 - The Story They Built

By noon, Linda and Richard were gone.

Rebecca insisted that Claire stop questioning them without legal representation.

Megan stayed.

Noah sat on the living room floor building a crooked tower from plastic blocks.

He had become unusually quiet.

Claire hated that most.

Children knew when adults lied.

They just did not understand why.

Megan made tea neither woman drank.

“I should have told you.”

Claire stared through the window.

“Yes.”

“I was scared.”

“So was I.”

Megan looked down.

“Mom has been saying things for months.”

Claire turned.

“What things?”

“That you were controlling Ethan.”

Claire almost smiled from disbelief.

“How?”

“She said you wanted the house only in your name.”

“It was inherited in my name.”

“I know.”

“She knew that too.”

Megan nodded.

“She also said you were pushing Ethan away from the business.”

Claire remembered arguments over exactly that.

Ethan had wanted to leave his father’s company two years earlier.

Claire encouraged him to build his own contracting business.

Richard hated the idea.

Linda called Claire selfish.

Claire suddenly saw another layer.

“If Ethan left the company, your father could lose access to his signature.”

Megan looked stunned.

“I never thought of that.”

Claire had.

And once the thought arrived, it would not leave.

Her phone buzzed.

Ethan.

I’M AT A MOTEL.

I FOUND SOMETHING.

Claire did not respond immediately.

Another message arrived.

PLEASE LET ME SEND IT.

Claire typed.

Send only.

A minute later, several screenshots appeared.

Texts between Ethan and Daniel.

Daniel had spent weeks feeding him suspicion.

Did Claire tell you why she met Rebecca again?

Ask yourself why she keeps documents hidden.

If she wanted you protected, your name would be on the deed.

Make sure you have somewhere safe to take Noah.

Claire felt sick.

Ethan had replied to those messages.

Sometimes angrily.

Sometimes fearfully.

Once he wrote.

I DON’T RECOGNIZE HER ANYMORE.

Claire stared at that sentence longest.

Megan leaned closer.

“What?”

Claire showed her.

Megan’s face fell.

“I’m sorry.”

Claire locked the screen.

“He wrote it.”

“But Daniel manipulated him.”

“Daniel did not type Ethan’s replies.”

Megan had no answer.

Claire knew the truth was complicated.

Ethan had been lied to.

But lies only worked because he allowed distrust to grow.

He had chosen other people’s explanations over his wife’s voice.

That mattered.

Her phone rang.

This time it was Rebecca.

“I spoke to a financial crimes attorney.”

Claire swallowed.

“That sounds terrifying.”

“It sounds worse than it necessarily is.”

Rebecca paused.

“But we need to preserve evidence immediately.”

“What should I do?”

“Back up the recordings.”

Claire did.

“Save the messages.”

She did.

“Photograph the deed.”

Done.

“And Claire?”

“Yes?”

“Check the security camera.”

Claire frowned.

“What camera?”

“The doorbell camera.”

Claire looked toward the hallway.

“What am I checking?”

“Every visit Daniel made to your house over the last thirty days.”

Megan suddenly looked nervous.

Claire noticed.

“What?”

Megan shook her head.

“Nothing.”

Claire stared at her.

“Megan.”

She swallowed.

“Daniel came here last Tuesday.”

Claire’s pulse jumped.

“I wasn’t home.”

“I know.”

“How do you know?”

Megan looked ashamed.

“Because Mom was with him.”

Claire opened the security app.

Tuesday.

Three forty-two in the afternoon.

Video appeared.

Linda stepped onto the porch.

Daniel stood beside her carrying a slim black folder.

Claire watched them ring the bell.

Nobody answered.

Then Linda reached beneath the flowerpot.

Claire stopped the video.

Her spare key.

She had forgotten Linda knew where it was.

Claire pressed play again.

Linda unlocked the door.

Daniel followed her inside.

They stayed for twenty-seven minutes.

Claire could barely breathe.

“What were they doing here?”

Megan whispered.

“I don’t know.”

Claire scrolled forward.

Twenty-seven minutes later, Daniel emerged.

The black folder was gone.

Linda locked the door.

Then she looked directly into the doorbell camera.

Her expression was calm.

Almost satisfied.

Claire replayed the moment.

Again.

And again.

Then Rebecca spoke quietly over the phone.

“Claire.”

“Yes?”

“Do not search your house alone.”

Claire froze.

“Why?”

May you like

“Because whatever Daniel brought inside may still be there.”
