Chapter 6 - The Call on Speaker

Nobody breathed.
Daniel continued before Megan could answer.
“Linda said Ethan left early.”
Megan looked at Claire.
Claire silently shook her head.
Do not reveal anything.
Megan forced her voice to sound normal.
“Yeah.”
Daniel sighed.
“Good.”
Linda rushed forward.
Megan stepped away.
Daniel kept talking.
“You need to make sure Claire doesn’t call the bank.”
Claire looked toward Richard.
His face had gone completely gray.
“Why?”
Megan asked.
Daniel paused.
“Because that would complicate things.”
“What things?”
Another pause.
Claire could almost hear his suspicion growing through the phone.
“Megan, where are you?”
“At Claire’s.”
Daniel went silent.
Claire stared at Megan.
Megan closed her eyes.
Then Daniel spoke.
“Is anyone listening?”
Megan looked directly at her mother.
“Yes.”
Daniel hung up.
Three seconds later, Linda’s phone began ringing.
She did not answer.
Then Richard’s phone rang.
He ignored it.
Claire’s rang next.
Unknown number.
Rebecca was still connected on the second phone.
“Do not answer,” Rebecca said.
Claire declined the call.
A voicemail arrived immediately.
Then another.
Rebecca asked Claire to forward them without opening the attachments.
The word attachments made Claire’s stomach tighten.
“What could he possibly send me?”
Richard stood.
“I need to tell you something.”
Linda snapped.
“No, you don’t.”
Richard turned toward his wife.
“Yes.”
The argument between them was different now.
Not theatrical.
Not defensive.
Terrified.
Richard looked at Claire.
“The loan isn’t eight hundred thousand anymore.”
Claire stared.
“What?”
“We refinanced.”
“How much?”
“One point three million.”
Megan whispered.
“Dad.”
Richard continued quickly.
“The business lost two major contracts last year.”
Claire felt dizzy.
Linda grabbed his sleeve.
“Stop.”
He pulled away.
“We took another line of credit.”
“Against what?”
Richard looked toward the blue folder containing Claire’s deed.
Claire understood.
“You tried to turn my house into collateral twice.”
“No.”
Claire waited.
“The second loan used the business assets.”
Richard rubbed his forehead.
“But the lender required personal guarantees.”
“From who?”
“Me.”
“And Ethan?”
Richard said nothing.
Claire’s anger rose again.
“You put your son on it too.”
“He signed company documents.”
“Without knowing what they were.”
Richard closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
Claire wanted to scream.
Instead, she became calmer.
That scared even her.
“So Ethan believed I was secretly preparing to take Noah.”
“Yes.”
“Because Daniel showed him incomplete documents.”
Richard nodded.
“And while Ethan was distracted believing his marriage was collapsing, you needed me to sign over property rights.”
Richard said nothing.
Linda finally exploded.
“We were trying to save the family business.”
Claire turned toward her.
“At the cost of my family.”
“You live comfortably because of that business.”
Claire stared at her.
“I pay my own mortgage.”
Linda laughed.
“On a house you inherited.”
“And that makes it yours?”
“No.”
Linda looked toward Noah.
“But Ethan deserves security too.”
Claire’s voice became very quiet.
“Do not use my son to justify this.”
Linda stepped back.
For once, she listened.
Rebecca spoke through the phone.
“Claire, I need you to do something immediately.”
“What?”
“Photograph every document in that blue folder.”
Claire frowned.
“Why?”
“Because if these people were willing to create one false document, we don’t know what else exists.”
Richard flinched.
Claire noticed.
Rebecca noticed the silence.
“Mr. Bennett?”
Richard stared at the floor.
Claire felt her pulse pounding.
“What else?”
Richard whispered.
“There’s another document.”
Linda closed her eyes.
Claire gripped the counter.
“What document?”
Richard looked at her.
“One that says Ethan contributed three hundred thousand dollars toward the house before your marriage.”
Claire almost laughed from disbelief.
“He didn’t.”
“I know.”
“What does that document do?”
Rebecca answered before Richard could.
“If someone tried to use it in a marital property dispute, it could create a claim.”
Claire looked toward the front door Ethan had walked through.
Suddenly his departure looked different.
Not forgiven.
Not harmless.
But engineered.
Someone had spent months building a story around them.
And Claire finally understood the purpose.
The goal had never been simply to make Ethan leave.
May you like
The goal was to make their marriage explode so violently that neither of them noticed what was being taken while they fought.
