Chapter 5 - The Name Already Written

Claire stared at the photograph until the letters blurred.
Her name was there.
Claire Bennett.
Written in handwriting that looked remarkably similar to hers.
But not identical.
She knew the difference.
Her capital C curved inward.
This one opened wide.
Her last name normally leaned slightly upward.
This one sat perfectly straight.
Someone had practiced.
Someone had prepared the signature before she ever saw the document.
Megan leaned over the counter.
“Oh my God.”
Linda immediately turned toward the door.
Claire stepped between her and the hallway.
“You’re staying until I understand what this is.”
“You cannot hold me here.”
“I’m not holding you.”
Claire pointed at the front door.
“You can leave whenever you want.”
Linda stared at her.
“But if you leave without explaining why my name is already on a legal document, I’m calling the police before you reach the sidewalk.”
Richard whispered.
“Claire.”
She turned toward him.
“Did you sign my name?”
“No.”
“Did you know somebody did?”
Richard looked at Linda.
That look was enough.
Megan backed away from her mother.
“Mom?”
Linda’s face hardened.
“It was a draft.”
Claire almost laughed.
“Draft signatures?”
“It was for discussion.”
“With a fake signature?”
“Nothing was filed.”
Claire looked at Richard.
“Was it filed?”
Richard hesitated.
Linda shouted.
“Richard.”
He covered his face.
Claire felt her heart sink.
“It was submitted to the lender.”
Megan sat down.
Claire could hear the refrigerator humming.
Noah had quietly moved into the living room with his tablet, but Claire knew he was still listening.
She lowered her voice.
“When?”
“Six days ago.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Six days.
For nearly a week, a document bearing a false version of her signature had existed somewhere outside this house.
Ethan texted again.
I DIDN’T KNOW.
Then another message.
DANIEL SAID YOU SIGNED IT.
Claire typed back.
Do not contact Daniel.
Do not contact your parents.
Save everything.
She hesitated.
Then added.
And do not come back here tonight.
Ethan replied almost immediately.
I understand.
That hurt too.
A week earlier, she would have wanted him beside her.
Now his presence felt like another problem she did not have energy to solve.
Claire called her attorney, Rebecca Shaw.
Rebecca answered on the third ring.
“Claire?”
“I need help.”
Something in Claire’s voice changed Rebecca’s tone instantly.
“What happened?”
Claire explained the document.
The fake signature.
The loan.
The recording.
Ethan leaving.
Rebecca remained silent for several seconds.
“Do you have the original deed?”
“Yes.”
“Keep it with you.”
Claire looked at the blue folder.
“Okay.”
“Do not sign anything.”
“I won’t.”
“Do not let anyone remove documents from that house.”
Claire looked toward Linda.
Linda looked away.
Rebecca continued.
“I want you to email me every photograph Ethan has.”
Claire swallowed.
“Rebecca, how bad is this?”
The answer came carefully.
“It could be a family dispute.”
Claire waited.
“Or?”
“Or someone committed serious financial fraud.”
Richard stood abruptly.
“I’m going to fix this.”
Rebecca heard him.
“Who said that?”
“My father-in-law.”
Rebecca’s voice became firm.
“Claire, put me on speaker.”
Claire did.
Rebecca spoke clearly.
“Mr. Bennett, do not contact the lender on Claire’s behalf.”
Richard stared at the phone.
“I can explain everything.”
“That is exactly what you should not do without counsel.”
Linda laughed bitterly.
“Now we need lawyers because Claire wants drama.”
Rebecca went silent.
Then she asked.
“Is that Linda?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
Rebecca’s voice turned ice cold.
“Linda, if your name is anywhere near the creation, transmission, or submission of a document carrying my client’s forged signature, I recommend you stop speaking immediately.”
Linda’s mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
For the first time all morning, Claire almost felt relief.
Then Megan’s phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her expression changed.
“Who is it?”
Megan whispered.
“Daniel.”
The entire kitchen went still.
Megan answered on speaker.
Daniel did not say hello.
He said only six words.

“Did Claire find the transfer page?”
