Chapter 14 - Linda's Exit Plan

The messages were worse than Claire expected.
Linda had written to Daniel for months.
She discussed Claire like a problem to be solved.
She complained that Ethan had become too independent after marriage.
She blamed Claire for his plan to leave the family company.
She worried that if Ethan walked away, Richard’s financial problems would surface.
Then came the line that explained everything.
If Ethan loses Claire, he comes back to us.
Claire read it twice.
This had never only been about the house.
Linda wanted her son back under family control.
The property scheme made separation useful.
But Linda’s resentment was personal.
Another email read.
Push the idea that she is preparing for divorce.
Another.
Use the guardianship meeting.
Another.
He already feels excluded because the deed is hers.
And then.
Make him believe she sees him as temporary.
Claire put the phone down.
Megan was crying.
“I knew she didn’t like you.”
Claire looked at her.
“But?”
“I didn’t know she hated what you represented.”
“What do I represent?”
Megan wiped her face.
“Ethan having a life outside them.”
Claire thought back.
Linda criticized every vacation that did not include the family.
Every holiday Claire spent with her own parents became an argument.
When Ethan considered another job, Linda called him disloyal.
When he and Claire decided to keep Noah in a different school district, Linda stopped speaking to them for two weeks.
Claire had called it difficult family dynamics.
Now it looked like control.
Ethan called.
Claire answered.
His voice sounded wrecked.
“I read all of it.”
Claire said nothing.
“I don’t know how I didn’t see it.”
“You didn’t want to.”
Ethan accepted that.
“Probably.”
“I need you to understand something.”
“I know.”
“No, you don’t.”
Claire stood near the dark kitchen window.
“You were manipulated.”
“Yes.”
“But you also believed them.”
“I know.”
“You held my wrist.”
His voice broke slightly.
“I know.”
“You frightened Noah.”
“I know.”
“You planned to leave and take him to your parents.”
“I know.”
Claire swallowed.
“I cannot erase those choices because somebody encouraged you.”
“I’m not asking you to.”
That answer surprised her.
Ethan continued.
“I want to help fix the legal mess.”
“Good.”
“And after that, if you never want me back in the house, I’ll accept it.”
Claire closed her eyes.
For the first time all day, he sounded like the man she had married.
But she no longer knew whether that man still existed.
Ethan asked.
“Can I see Noah tomorrow?”
“Yes.”
“Thank you.”
“Do not bring your mother.”
“I blocked her.”
Claire looked toward Megan.
“So did Megan.”
There was a pause.
Then Ethan said.
“I found one more email.”
Claire almost did not want to ask.
“What?”
“It’s from Dad to Daniel.”
“When?”
“Three weeks ago.”
“What does it say?”
Ethan hesitated.
“Dad wanted to stop.”
Claire frowned.
“What?”
“He told Daniel the plan had gone too far.”
Megan leaned closer.
Ethan continued.
“Dad said he would confess everything to us.”
Claire remembered Richard’s behavior.
Guilty.
Terrified.
But different from Linda.
“What happened?”
“Mom replied from Dad’s account.”
Claire’s pulse jumped.
“What did she say?”
“That Richard was confused.”
Megan whispered.
“Oh no.”
Ethan continued.
“She told Daniel to ignore him.”
Claire slowly sat.
“Did your father know she did that?”
“I don’t think so.”
Claire remembered Richard’s message.
The part Linda doesn’t know.
Maybe he had been trying to stop this longer than anyone realized.
Then the front motion alert appeared on Claire’s phone.
Someone stood on the porch.
It was Richard.
Alone.
He held a cardboard box.
Claire opened the door but did not invite him inside.
Richard looked exhausted.
“I brought everything.”
“What is everything?”
He held out the box.
“Every document Daniel ever gave me.”
Claire stared.
Richard’s eyes filled.
“And proof that I tried to stop Linda.”
Claire did not take the box yet.
“Why now?”
Richard looked toward the house where Noah was sleeping.
“Because today I watched my son leave his pregnant wife.”
He swallowed.
“And I realized saving my company had turned me into the kind of father I spent my whole life promising I would never become.”
Claire took the box.
Before leaving, Richard said one more thing.
“Linda doesn’t know I’m here.”
Claire looked toward the street.
“Where is she?”
Richard’s expression changed.
“I don’t know.”
At that exact moment, Megan’s phone began ringing.
Linda.
Megan answered.
Her mother was screaming.
Not angry.
Panicked.
May you like
“Where is the box?”
