Chapter 17 - The Storage Unit

Authorities handled the storage unit.

Claire did not go.

She was exhausted.

For the first time in days, she listened to her body.

She rested.

She drank water.

She sat in the nursery and felt her daughter kick beneath her ribs.

Noah colored pictures on the floor.

One showed four stick figures.

Claire.

Noah.

The baby.

Ethan.

Claire stared at the drawing.

“Who is this?”

Noah pointed.

“Daddy.”

“I see.”

“He is outside.”

Claire noticed Ethan’s figure stood beside the house rather than inside it.

“Why?”

Noah shrugged.

“He doesn’t live here right now.”

Children drew truth without decoration.

That afternoon, Samantha called.

“The storage unit contained records.”

Claire braced herself.

“What kind?”

“Financial.”

“Anything involving my property?”

“Yes.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“More forged documents?”

“Drafts.”

“How many?”

“Several.”

Claire almost laughed.

“Of course.”

“But nothing else appears to have been submitted.”

Relief.

Small.

But real.

Samantha continued.

“They also found files related to Richard’s mother’s estate.”

“And?”

“There is strong evidence Linda diverted proceeds from rental income after telling the family the property was tied up in probate.”

Claire stared out the window.

“So she kept the house.”

“It appears so.”

“And borrowed against it.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“We don’t know yet.”

Claire suspected she did.

Control.

Money.

Fear of losing status.

Maybe all three.

Then Samantha said.

“There was also a folder with your name.”

Claire gripped the phone.

“What was inside?”

“Photographs.”

Claire went cold.

“Of what?”

“You leaving Rebecca’s office.”

“The bank.”

“Your brother’s house.”

Claire shut her eyes.

Someone had followed her.

Nothing illegal about the places she visited.

But each image had been reframed as secret behavior.

“What else?”

“A photo of you crying in your car after a medical appointment.”

Claire remembered that day.

Her doctor had told her the baby was healthy.

She cried from relief because she had spent a week terrified over a test result.

Daniel had apparently photographed the tears.

Then written a caption.

Emotional instability increasing.

Claire felt anger so intense it became clarity.

They had not simply lied to Ethan.

They had curated her life.

They selected every vulnerable moment and assigned it a new meaning.

Samantha continued.

“There is one positive thing.”

“What?”

“This evidence destroys the credibility of the incapacity narrative.”

Claire breathed.

“And the lender?”

“They have removed your property from consideration pending investigation.”

For the first time since Ethan rolled the suitcase toward the front door, Claire felt the house become hers again.

Not legally.

It always had been.

Emotionally.

The walls no longer felt invaded.

That evening, Ethan stopped by only because Claire invited him.

He stayed on the porch.

No bags.

No expectation.

No attempt to enter.

Claire handed him Noah’s backpack for the overnight visit.

Ethan looked toward the kitchen.

His eyes landed on the stool.

Then the counter.

The place where the phone had recorded everything.

“I keep seeing that morning.”

Claire said nothing.

“I wish I could take it back.”

“You can’t.”

“I know.”

He swallowed.

“I scared you.”

“Yes.”

The word hurt him.

Claire did not soften it.

“You had never held me like that before.”

“I know.”

“But once matters.”

“Yes.”

Ethan looked down.

“I started counseling.”

Claire was surprised.

“When?”

“Today.”

“That was fast.”

“I didn’t want to spend another week explaining myself to myself.”

Claire almost smiled.

Almost.

Ethan looked at her.

“I’m not asking you to come.”

“Good.”

“I’m going whether we stay married or not.”

That mattered more.

Claire handed him Noah’s dinosaur.

“He sleeps with this.”

“I know.”

Their fingers almost touched.

Both pulled away.

Ethan stepped off the porch.

Then turned.

“Claire.”

“What?”

“I don’t want forgiveness because my mother lied.”

She waited.

“I want to become someone who would have asked you the truth before believing anyone else.”

Claire looked at him for a long moment.

“Then become him.”

Ethan nodded.

He walked to the car.

Claire closed the door.

Her phone rang.

Samantha.

Claire answered.

“What happened?”

Samantha’s first sentence changed everything again.

May you like

“Linda is missing.”
