Chapter 2 - The Recording That Never Stopped

Ethan did not leave.
Not immediately.
His suitcase remained beside the open front door while the entire house sank into a silence that felt almost unnatural.
Linda recovered first.
“Megan is emotional.”
Megan stared at her mother.
“You called me at two fourteen this morning.”
“That proves nothing.”
“You told me to come here before eight.”
Linda crossed her arms.
“Because I knew Ethan was upset.”
Megan shook her head.
“That isn’t what you said.”
Ethan’s voice dropped.
“What exactly did she say?”
Linda stepped between them.
“Ethan, you don’t need to listen to this.”
Claire almost laughed.
That sentence answered more than Linda realized.
For weeks, Ethan had been different.
More suspicious.
More distant.
He checked his phone constantly.
He stopped leaving work documents on the kitchen table.
Twice, Claire had caught him staring at her as though she were a stranger.
Whenever she asked what was wrong, he said he was tired.
Whenever she pushed harder, Linda somehow called within the hour.
Claire had thought it was coincidence.
She did not believe that anymore.
Megan looked at Ethan.
“She said Claire was about to destroy you.”
Claire frowned.
“How?”
Megan hesitated.
“She said Claire had been meeting with a lawyer.”
Claire blinked.
“I have.”
Ethan looked at her sharply.
Claire held up a hand.
“Because we’re updating the guardianship documents before the baby arrives.”
Ethan stared at her.
“What?”
“I told you three times.”
“No, you didn’t.”
“Yes, I did.”
Linda interrupted.
“She never told you what those meetings were really about.”
Claire turned toward her.
“And you know because?”
Linda went silent.
That was when Richard quietly walked to the kitchen counter.
He picked up the phone that had been recording.
The screen still showed the red timer.
Eleven minutes.
Fourteen seconds.
Richard stopped it.
“Whose phone is this?”
Claire looked at it.
“Mine.”
She had forgotten she placed it there while making Noah breakfast.
Megan had started the recording on Claire’s phone.
Not her own.
Claire looked at Megan.
“You pressed record?”
Megan nodded.
“Before Ethan came downstairs.”
“Why?”
Megan looked toward Linda again.
“Because Mom told me she needed proof.”
Linda’s face hardened.
“Proof of what?”
“That Claire would lose control.”
Claire felt cold.
Ethan looked at his mother.
“You told her that?”
Linda did not answer.
Megan continued.
“You said if Claire screamed, threatened him, or grabbed him, Ethan would finally have what he needed.”
“For what?”
Claire already knew she would hate the answer.
Megan swallowed.
“To prove she was unstable.”
Noah looked up.
“Mommy isn’t unstable.”
The adults went silent.
Claire crouched beside him.
“I know, sweetheart.”
Noah wrapped both arms around her neck.
Behind him, Ethan looked devastated.
But Claire felt no sympathy.
Not yet.
Because the pieces were beginning to fit together.
The sudden arguments.
Ethan secretly asking where she went.
Linda constantly discussing whether pregnancy made Claire “too emotional.”
Richard asking casual questions about the house.
Ethan suddenly suggesting Noah spend more nights with his grandparents.
Claire stood.
“Ethan.”
He looked at her.
“Were you planning to take Noah?”
His mouth opened.
Then closed.
Claire’s stomach dropped.
“Answer me.”
“I was going to stay with my parents.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
Ethan rubbed his face.
“My attorney said temporary separation might be easier if Noah stayed somewhere stable.”
Claire stared at him.
“Your attorney?”
Megan whispered something under her breath.
Claire barely heard it.
“What?”
Megan looked horrified.
“Ethan doesn’t have an attorney.”
Ethan frowned.
“Yes, I do.”
“What’s his name?”
“Daniel Cross.”
Megan’s face lost its color.
Claire noticed.
So did Ethan.
“What?”
Megan whispered.
“Daniel Cross isn’t a lawyer.”
Ethan stared at her.
Megan shook her head.
“He works for Dad.”
Everyone turned toward Richard.
Richard slowly sat down.

And for the first time, Claire saw genuine fear on his face.
