Chapter 3 - The Man Who Wasn't a Lawyer

Richard looked ten years older in less than ten seconds.
Ethan walked toward him.
“What does Daniel do for you?”
Richard rubbed his palms together.
“He handles financial consulting.”
Ethan stopped.
“You told me he was a family attorney.”
Linda immediately spoke.
“Because he understands complicated situations.”
Claire stared at her.
“So your solution was to lie?”
Linda ignored her.
Ethan’s voice grew harder.
“He gave me legal advice.”
Richard looked down.
“He shouldn’t have.”
“He told me Claire was preparing custody papers.”
Claire felt anger rise through the fear.
“Based on what?”
Linda answered before Richard could.
“The documents she left in her car.”
Claire stared at her.
“You went through my car?”
Linda folded her arms.
“The door was unlocked.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
Claire remembered the envelope.
Guardianship documents.
Life insurance beneficiaries.
Emergency medical authorization.
Everything her actual attorney had recommended before the baby arrived.
Someone had taken photographs of those pages.
Someone had shown Ethan only selected pieces.
“Ethan.”
Claire faced him.
“What exactly did Daniel show you?”
Ethan looked increasingly sick.
“A page naming your brother as Noah’s emergency guardian.”
“In case we both die.”
“He said you were removing me.”
“That page literally says ‘upon death or permanent incapacity of both parents.’”
Ethan did not respond.
Claire understood immediately.
He had never read the full document.
He had believed whatever he was shown.
And then he had punished her for it.
“You never asked me.”
“I thought you would lie.”
The words escaped him before he could stop them.
Claire stared at him.
That one sentence broke something.
Seven years of trust had not been destroyed by Linda.
Linda had pushed.
Richard had helped.
Daniel had manipulated documents.
But Ethan had chosen not to ask his wife.
He had chosen suspicion.
He had chosen secrecy.
And this morning, he had chosen the suitcase.
Claire straightened.
“You should leave.”
Ethan looked stunned.
“Claire.”
“You wanted to leave.”
“That was before—”
“Before you discovered you might be wrong?”
No one spoke.
Claire pointed toward the door.
“You don’t get to change your mind because the lie became inconvenient.”
Noah began crying.
Ethan looked toward him.
Claire hated the pain on her son’s face.
But she hated the idea of teaching him that love meant accepting anything even more.
Ethan crouched.
“Buddy.”
Noah stepped behind Claire.
Ethan closed his eyes.
“Okay.”
He slowly stood.
“I’ll go.”
Linda immediately moved toward the suitcase.
“You can stay with us.”
Ethan did not look at her.
“No.”
Linda froze.
“What?”
“I’m not going anywhere with you.”
Richard looked up.
“Ethan.”
Ethan turned toward his father.
“How much did you know?”
Richard said nothing.
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“That much.”
He pulled the suitcase upright.
Before walking out, he stopped near Megan.
“Send me everything.”
Megan nodded.
Then he looked at Claire.
“I’m sorry.”
Claire did not answer.
The door closed behind him.
Noah buried his face against her side.
Linda moved toward Claire.
“You’re happy now?”
Claire looked at her in disbelief.
Richard stood.
“Linda.”
“No.”
Linda pointed at Claire.
“She has been waiting for this.”
Claire felt something inside her become very calm.
“Get out.”
Linda laughed.
“This is my son’s house.”
Claire looked at Richard.
Richard looked away.
That was enough confirmation.
Claire walked to the cabinet beside the refrigerator and removed a blue folder.
She placed it on the counter.
“No.”
She opened it.
“This house belonged to my grandmother.”
Linda’s expression changed.
“She transferred it to me before our wedding.”
Claire turned one page around.
The deed was visible.
“Ethan’s name was never on it.”
Richard stared at the document.
Claire noticed something else.
Not shock.
Recognition.
“You already knew.”
Richard said nothing.
Claire narrowed her eyes.
“That’s what this was about, wasn’t it?”
Linda grabbed her purse.
“You’re being ridiculous.”
Claire blocked her path with one sentence.
“How much money did you borrow against a house you don’t own?”
Richard closed his eyes.
May you like
And suddenly nobody cared about Ethan’s suitcase anymore.
